New Car, £3.5k tops

I think the insurance companies will be a little reluctant to quote on a 2.5 V6 Mondy :p

Groups 1 to 9 are usually similar.

Ignore insurance groups, actually do some quotes!

Groups mean very little!
A quick confused.com gives me £1.8k on the 2.5 v6, £600 on my current car and £900 for Focus 1.8 Ghia :)

I've seen a few Focuses and Mondeos locally, I think I'm gonna go make some enquiries tomorrow. :)

mondeo will tend to be cheaper to insure than a focus

i found moneysupermarket.com a bit better than confused.com can edit quotes to quickly get new ones too (mess around with adding named drivers, sometimes it helps, sometimes not)

I would imagine it works like this:
- Young cops jealous of BMW
- Young cops pull over BMW driver who gives them abuse
- Occasional BMW driver acts like a moron on the road, but because they've now got all this rage at BMW drivers in them, all BMW drivers are morons.

My dad did once say he doesn't mind BMWs, he just knows the badge is like an advert which says "this driver is a moron". And usually when he says it, the BMW driver does something stupid. Like this morning a BMW overtook me (doing 60) in a 60 (and it wasn't exactly a straight road), they must've been doing 80 by the time they got past. :)

It's just one of those things. :)

---

Seriously: I looked at Golfs for a while, but they're fairly expensive, especially compared to the Focus / Mondeo.

OMG 80 in an NSL to overtake? really? child killer.

but my dad was just like "it's a Skoda", I don't want that in my driveway.

Don't blame him, I mean imagine the embarassment of having a Skoda sat there, it would distract the eye from the prestigious Vectra sat next to it ;)

Oh and I'd go with a Focus or something like that...

Don't speed and then you won't have to worry about where your speeding fine money is going then eh? :)

When I said "our fines" I was being rather general.. I've never had a speeding fine in my life, so I indeed don't worry about it.
I got pulled 2 weeks ago for "swerving eratically" which was basically 25mph moving out across the white line a little to avoid a 2inch drop where there was a manhole cover. A pointless pull for an obvious reason. Mind you, some people are happy to just knock their cars to bits over any surface.

Also since I got accused of not being helpful, the Focus is a nice suggestion, it gets in the cheaper insurance brackets than the mondeo and has similar refinement etc. I'd avoid the 1.4 and 1.6 and get the 1.8 though, there is a difference, and it is noticable.

Yeah the speed limits came from about then.. and what car did they base it on? probably one with drum brakes all round, hell they probably still quote the stopping distances from a car with drums all round.

The thing with speed limits is, some people really are crap drivers, and god knows how they ever got a license, so 60mph is more than fast enough for these kind of people, where as someone that enjoys a spirited drive, or someone thats done an advance driving course, or even some track racing, is more than capable of handeling a car at well over the NSL, providing road conditions allow, yet they would just be branded as "child killers", and "maniac's"
Even the police need a bit of common sense. 60mph on a 1mile straight is fine, 70 or even 80 probably would be too.. but if it was a narrow single track road, then probably even 60mph would be dodgy. So if you see someone doing 70mph on a nice clear straight bit of road that just so happens to be a 60mph limit... just leave em to it eh? they're doing no harm, they are still driving responsibly... dont be a knob and pull em for doing 10mph over and claim they are putting lives at risk blah blah.

I think your dad needs to grow up, and you need to grow yourself some balls young man ;)

Go out for some test drivers, the standard focus, fiesta, gold, civic, fabia, leon. Some of them might not be in your budget, but it will give you an inditcation of what sort of car tickles your fancy.

I would say buy a Pulsar GTI-R then be able to out run his crummy cop car any day of the week.... Except Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, and Fri when it breaks down :p :D:D:D

The police are the to uphold the law, not their interpretation of it. Either way, I don't think they would pull someone doing 65-70mph in an NSL, but you can't expect them not to. And if you try and tell them your point of view on this, they will give you a ticket. If you're apologetic you might just get a warning.

If I could, I would buy something ridiculously fast, but again, I can't be bothered with the insurance. And yeah, something breaks down would just make me rage.

I think I'm being a bit lazy about buying (ie, not really going about looking) just because I'm on holiday just now and not driving anywhere, so I'm not being reminded how bad the Starlet is. :)

I've been driving a Focus as my first car for around 5 months and really liking it and insurance wise found it cheaper than Mondeos. It handles really well, good image for a first car and comfortable too. Only repairs I had to do was to do with MOT as they were picky and because I hit a curb and killed a drop link :p

How do the Estate Focuses (Focus's? Focii? :P) compare to the Hatchback? I'm going to look at / possibly buy a 2001 Focus Estate 1.8 Zetec tomorrow morning. It's in top nick and I like it, but I was just wondering if anyone knew about reliability and maintenance costs?

Emm they do tend to be cheaper than the hatchback but I would think you can get something much newer than that for your budget. Do you really need an Estate?

Funny how PC Plod is able to get upper market cars now tho... gone are the days when it was bottom of the range diesel astra's and omega's. Good to see our speeding fines etc are being spent on giving them better cars instead of employing more police officers to do some REAL police work.

you are confusing traffic cars with plod cars. Its rare to see any decent cars being used by pc plod.

Thats not fraud, how is it fraud? I'm a named driver on my dad's Focus 'just in case' I need to drive it, I haven't driven it yet and I haven't been done for fraud yet.

Your dad sounds like mine, has so many misconceptions and hates so many cars for no real reason. Maybe he should be posting on OcUK :p
