I can get hold of one for just over 250 quid and my father bought one earlier today

Does anybody think it's worth it? it seems like a good deal so i told him to go for it.. one thing i don't get about it is the size, it's supposed to have the same gubbins as a OCZ Vertex but the Falcon drive is 1" bigger than that.

Btw, do i just get Win7 Beta for free until next year then buy it? is that what people do?

yeah £250 for 128gb and £163 for 64gb, prices arent TOO bad, but still high, but obviously a lot cheaper than OCZ vertex drives.

go place an order ocuk:)

think OCZ are just using their name as most people havent heard about these gskill falcons, once engadget and the other hardware sites start reviewing them then ocz will have to drop their prices.

I was going to order a 128gb falcon earlier but resisted... seems that have they are already updated with the latest firmware also.

I would love one but i really dont need it.. been trying to shift my debt for months but something always comes out i want to try.

One reason i bought my velociraptor was to get in bf2 faster but they have the time limit thing now so that was a bit pointless .

OCZ have such a good name with reason, they deserve a lot of credit for the regular firmware updates to the vertex drives. Their after sales support is excellent. That aside,

I'd say no. £250 for a 120gb ssd is less sensible than the £160 for 60gb. An ssd isn't meant for data storage, it's for your operating system and applications. I would be astonished if that comes to over 60gb. My entire operating system fits comfortably on a 4gb usb stick, and I appreciate that windows is larger but still can't believe it needs 120gb of space. So I would recommend the 60gb version, unless you absolutely have to have such a massive os partition.

Personally very happy with my 30gb vertex, holds xp and two copies of linux with no problems at all.

Well i know it's not for storage and more for speed for starters, secondly my steam folder takes up 30+gb already and will get bigger when i want certain games that come out in the future. So i would get no less than 120/128gb in my situation. Getting a 60gb for me would just be asking for an upgrade sooner rather than later, and i would like the games loading times & windows etc to take advantage of it, i dont see how that is a waste?

Third i have heard these drives are very good.. so are you saying G skill are no good? because i am sure other people would say otherwise.

the g skill is practically identical. they both use the same linindix or something controller. its not ocz who's regularly releasing the firmware updates its the chipset manufacturer, which gskill is also using so you will get the same performance as the ocz and firmware updates will be out within weeks of each other, no point paying 15%+ more money for ocz.

My thoughts exactly, the same size gb OCZ Vertex would cost over 300 quid so why pay 50+ more for basically the same thing?

Placed an order for one, going to come in same time as my fathers by the seem of it should have it tuesday latest.

seems like a good price for such a fast drive and just under 250 :) over 50 quid cheaper than vertex.

The new firmware is out for the Falcons (4th June 2009):

http://gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=736

Having been in your position for the last week I would say that either the G.Skill Falcon 128Gb or the Samsung PB22-J 128gb are the best two 128GB ssd drives currently (Personally I think the samsung edges it if you read the benchmarks, but both sound like great drives) - The vertex is almost identical. So, bearing in mind that the falcon firmware has just been updated, I see very little reason to pay a premium for it.

Any idea when the leaked 7227 will be available for download 'officially'?

never, i doubt any of these leaked builds will make it to the public legally, There mainly for the OEMs and the People who are designing the software for Win7. The next build for the public will probably be the full version.

as for the falcons, well i was one of the first people (i think) to point these little bests out to some people, identical to the OCZ drive, good firmware and TRIM support, all this for less then the OCZ Vertex, Customer Service doesn't matter for me if the product is good.

install the leaked build 7227 instead:) RC1 7100 isn't the best.
I did at first, but after installing all my drivers, the start menu and explorer would hang. I thought it might be the newer version playing up, but after installing 7100 again, I stopped the PC auto installing the dodgy Asus ATK100101 thing or whatever the hell it is. Played havoc before on other installations and always stay away from it from now. It must have gotten installed on the 7227 ver.

Nonetheless Im happy with 7100 til RTM :)

no newer builds will be available to the public than 7100 RC, only the final build which will be in shops in a few months. 7227 and 7201 are both very stable, they are both on the 2 big torrent sites.

Yeah the falcon seems a very good price, the same size samsungs are 30 quid dearer and i dont know if they can even use TRIM.

havent seen any benchmarks but looks like samsung has slightly higher writes.

Apparently the falcons have about 5mb/s more on write since new firmware.so i would guess theres not much in it.

Customer support doesnt seem as fast with responses as i remember for g skill, at least thats what it seems like looking on their forums. anyone know what happened there?

Ive been using my Falcon for about a month (still got the 1307 firmware on it cos i dont fancy formatting AGAIN!) its been great, still getting 255/195mb/s. GSkill are ok, a bit slower rolling things out, but considering how much cheaper the drive is its hardly a big deal.
