CRT still available?

My eye's seem really sensitive to this setting and anything below 75 hurts (no pun intended) so the higher the better but are a lot of LCD's capped at 60Hertz?

most are limited to 60hz when displaying at their native resolution, this is where the 2233rz is different.
the sammy 2233rz has a refresh rate of 120hz when set at 1680*1050 which is better than most crt monitors.

This pretty much explains it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refresh_rate#Cathode_ray_tubes

Low refresh rates on LCDs won't cause flicker. But you get response time issues instead, with ghosting, something you won't get with crts as every image is replaced on every cycle.

As it says there, most lcd displays backlight flicker is normally over 200Hz.

LCD refresh rate that governs how often a new image is received from the video card. The Grey to Grey response time is how long it takes each pixel to change, when you get a mixture of colours which will take different times to change to the correct colour so shadowing occurs.

It also means the 120hz lcd moniors are not better than CRTs, but they are required for 3d vison due to the way it works.
But given twice as many updates as a standard LCD less shadowing is likely to be seen.

Hope that's clear?

Hi
i didnt say lcd monitors are better than crt's (even though they would be for simple web browsing..easier on the eyes and a sharper picture). but i said the refresh rate of 120 hz at a resolution of 1680*1050 is better(i should have used the word higher than what most crt's can do).

Well my fw900 does 1600x900@120hz.

Besides, 120hz isn't just 120hz.

I'm yet to see one of these new sammy lcd's in action but a big part of me suspects they still aint as good as a top CRT for fps shooters..

Can't wait to find out though, they aint half got me curious but at £400 or so..noway ;)

thats pretty nice...i never had a crt that good myself and i wouldnt say the sammy could compete with a good crt but as far as lcd's are concerned its a big improvement.

ive just come from a sammy 226bw which was pretty good for games apart from the motion....when playing on lcd's it always seems as though half the frames arent being displayed as though the characters are warping and not running......this is what the 120hz corrects.

btw i bought mine for abt 290 on its own

If you're in to playing games like the Quake series then the fluidity of a good CRT (input lag + response time) poops all over any TFT.

I'm not saying TFTs are bad (I ditched all of my CRTs), just that they are not the best at everything.

My Mitsubishi Diamond 230SB 22" was one of the best monitors I have ever owned.

+1

I had the 19' Mitsubishi Diamond Pro (in the Uber rare all black case!!!)....

It had special 'game' modes, which made the colours more vibrant, and blacks blacker than ANY LCD i've seen.

UT2004 looked sensational.....:D[email protected],yum...

Only downside was the two very thin 'wires' that could be visible on the screen....you had to look carefully to notice them, but they were there...:(

For Emulators with old 2d sprite games, CRT's are still king of the hill......

Yer i know the "wires" your on about.

To me though, 85hz would be just plain nasty. Need at least 100! and preferably 120!

And back on topic..the best place to get them from is a well known auction site for a really cheap price. They aint exactly the sort of thing that break very often. For reference

Best 19" crt = iiyama 454
Best 21" crt = p1220
Only 24" widescreen crt = fw900

I've still got 2 930SBs(only use 1 at a time), but they are a but fickle and need a good wack now an then. :/ Need to get a LCD to replace then. (I have a 22" LCD to got with them as a 2 monitors setup)

The 2 wire are due to them being aperture grille CRTs, much better than the usual shadow mask CRTs. Aperture Grille was patented by Sony and helped the company dominate the CRT TV market, since until the patent expried, no one else could match the quality. That's why sony TVs were almost flat and most other TVs like goldfish bowls. :D

I used to have a 22" Sony Trinitron. It did some stupid resolution at a stupidly high refresh rate and Unreal Tournament used to look the canine's scrotum on it.

Still never seen an LCD that comes even close to it and probably never will.
