Cat5e For Phone Extention

Hi,

I have been thinking about replacing a phone extension that is roughly 10-15meters with some cat 5.

I was going to just plug one end straight into the main box then wire the other into the extension box, i have then got a 15meter rj11 cable comming from the box to my router.

Would there be any point in using cat5 when i have got 15m of rj11 on the other end?

only use I can see in using cat 5 is if you can see yourself using the phone extension as an ethernet able at some point

I use cat5 for everything including phone extensions and i have never had any issues

Keep the run as short as possible - that's the main thing with phone extensions.

In my old house I was running phones over Cat5e and only lost about 50kbps sync speed compared to the master socket and that was over about 35m or cable.

You would have lost less with telephone cable, down to the nature of the technology.

The turn rate on Cat5 adds up when compared to the same length over normal 3 pair.

50kbps on a line that synced at circa 20mbit is hardly worth losing any sleep over though.

Phones work over a minimum of cat 3, so it would be fine, but surely its more hassle to hide cat 5 cable?
