Im trying to fix a pc for someone this pc is in dire condition, they did not look after it at all and im getting so hacked off with spending too many hours on it for very little return.

Basically they dumped this pc on me as it had problems with the graphics card, which i replaced, i booted into windows, no antivirus riddled with spyware, adaware and god knows what else, they insisted i do a healthcheck rather than a wipe (which i suggested) but they insisted so to keep the customer happy i went along....done that, worked fine, gave it back and later that night it kept crashing, so i picked it up again said it would need a reinstall of windows, went to reinstall windows, installed drivers for the gfx card and blam.....reboot...black screen...since then i cannot get a signal from the card.

I cant pinpoint the problem, it seems that this pc has more than 1 issue somewhere..iv spent a good week trying to get this pc working (in my own time ofcourse in the evenings) and have got nowhere with it.

all i want to do is get them out the door.:(

Never had such pc's which have been in such a state as these:(

Have you tried a different card in the rig?

If you have - try running a skeleton setup and see if you get any success. If you do it would point to C64's suggestion.

Yes as mentioned, before they bought a new agp card, i borrowed one off my mate to test to make sure it was there card that was borked, and it was very clearly as they were getting lines/artifacts all over the screen (typical gfx card issue).

This is why i suggested a new graphics card, at the time there wasnt any other symptoms suggesting any other issues

Thought you might have judging from your post.

I edited my post just as you posted yours:

Iv handed the pc's back, it turns out its more than just a "few" problems, the thing is in a state. Never doing this again, lol!

Im going to try my hand at web development i think, think I would see more return

Best thing is to barebone the system change one componant at a time (ofcourse you need spares of everything).

If your not been paid for things like this don't do it. It will get you in the end and you will be sick of answering phone calls e.t.c. If they can't keep it clean then just mention to them your time is valuable now to you more than fixing pc's so atleast you can get them off your back. I hate people who take the p!s and they think you have nothing better to do with your life except fix computers. Does my nut in.

I really havnt got the time to do it mate, iv been fixing pc's for a few friend here and there (as my main job is in networking and voice) and its never been an issue, usually its a job i can handle, but these 3 pc's, well, i just couldnt get over it. Im not wasting anymore of my time for very little money.

Good riddance  maybe next time they will take care of there pc's,lol

Some repair jobs turn out like that though, don't they?. Looks fairly straightforward and then just turns into a complete nightmare. :p

For what it's worth, I started out my part time business a few years ago with IT support and PC repairs, home networking etc but as you said, time invested doesn't mean anywhere like a decent return money wise. After about a year of doing so, I binned PC repairs and moved solely into web design and development. Much happier now although again, time invested in web dev work can be seriously heavy and the monetary returns are sometimes not as good as you would imagine. :)

Best of luck with whatever road you choose to travel down though.

Your talking like me now, time is more important that fixing systems. I work in a college and I hate gettin calls outside of normal working hours now. I don't give my number out any more I get them to email me and I choose to ignore it or if it's payed and worth my time I do it and email them back. :D

Likewise, although I'm a fulltime firefighter and getting calls to my mobile when on duty has landed me in hot water a few times.

I haven't even bothered putting my phone number on my website as I would rather folk email me instead of phone me. In fact I have not even SEO'd my own site in that much depth as at the moment, I have more than enough web projects on the go and in the pipeline that I really don't want people to find me online that easily. Not at this point in time anyway!.

Im glad im not the only one who has been through this hell! lol!

Take it to pc world, they will fix it:cool:

LOL!!!

The purple shirted folk charge an absolute fortune for basic PC repairs but then again, they get the business from folk who don't know any better, so you can't blame them. :p
