Hey Guys,

As some of you may have seen ive been in the market for a scirocco and basically thats gone down the pan as my mum took one look at it and decided that if I own one I will kill myself, and shes not going to have anything to do with it . Truth of this aside Im not stupid enough to turn away the money shes willing to put towards a new car for me, so a compromise must be reached! We are buying new and have narrowed our search to two:

Honda Civic ES 1.8 VTEC
VW Golf Mk6 GT 1.4 TSI

I know theres a difference in price, but that aside which one will I enjoy being in the most and which would you recommend?

Thanks again guys for all your help...I will be taking them both for a test drive next weekend all being well.

Golf, the Civic is rubbish.

Why not get the Scirocco 1.4TSI? It does seem a shame to waste the opportunity to spend £15,000+ on a car on a generic hatchback which will make you look like a sales rep or somebody who has just rented a car from Avis.

Yeah I know, but my mum doesnt seem to have any logical thoughts on the issue :S. Ive pointed all these things out but she doesnt care. The only real issue she makes is that the golf has 5 doors...which is true and will make things a bit easier cos my nan is getting on and stuff. But shes just not being logical.

Show me a woman who is:D

I completely missed the fact VW were bringing out a new Scirocco. I thought for a minute you were talking about the old style one and was about to say "will you miss £500" lol.

I've just been reading up and I love it. This bit got me a bit  though:

"The 1.4 TSI now offers 200 HP (147 kW) on the road " 200hp from a 1.4? Wow.

Thats the 2.0 TSI? The 1.4TSI is 160bhp IIRC.

They might come in different states of tune but one of my staff has a 1.4 TSI Leon (2009) which I'm sure is only 120bhp. It's a very nice engine though and the turbo makes the 1.4 feel like a much bigger engine.

If insurance is an issue (it was for him after he killed his Focus) then it seems a wise choice but otherwise I'd be working on your mum some more ;).

The cheap plastic interior and ridiculous styling that one day will suddenly date by about 10 years.

Admitedlly it will one day date but I still think they are one of the best looking new cars produced....

Ok, that helps a lot, if anyone else has some more thoughts theyre most welcome.

BTW insurance isnt a problem particularly and my mum wont be moved on the scirocco issue, shes stubborn as a mule when she wants to be :)

Is it the performance of the Scirocco she doesnt like?

Surely therefore the 1.4TSI Scirocco is an alternative?

Would you not rather have a 12 month old Audi A3 or something?

Well I dont think she likes the car, she wants something with 5 doors, I think the performance is a bit of an issue, she looks at things like insurance and doesnt want me spending too much, not that im fussed. But shes just decided not one of those. Im not too fussed about the branding and she wants to make use of the scrappage, which is fine.

You've stated you've got about 15k to play with, not sure how much money your putting into the car yourself but have you looked at 2nd hand cars? An Accord Type-R can be had for £5k or £6 for a very nice example which would fit the bill for you, 4doors and will be plenty quick enough :)

It's also about 7-10 years old so probably unlikely to sway somebody about to buy a brand new hatchback.
