Little advice on final car choice...

Well I dont think she likes the car, she wants something with 5 doors, I think the performance is a bit of an issue, she looks at things like insurance and doesnt want me spending too much, not that im fussed. But shes just decided not one of those. Im not too fussed about the branding and she wants to make use of the scrappage, which is fine.

The thing with the scrappage scheme is you're still better off buying nearly new. If you got a 12 month old A3 like fox suggested, it would be about the same price as a new Golf with the scrappage included. You get a better car and can still sell your old car, for a few 100 quid

You've stated you've got about 15k to play with, not sure how much money your putting into the car yourself but have you looked at 2nd hand cars? An Accord Type-R can be had for £5k or £6 for a very nice example which would fit the bill for you, 4doors and will be plenty quick enough :)

Yes ive thought about it, no I want something new and an accord wont fit in my garage, golf/civic is literally as big as I can go :). I know it makes financial sense to buy second hand but im not worried about that. Equally my mum wont want to put towards anything Audi/BMW/Mercedes because she thinks theyre luxury cars and I dont need one right now (I know its not logical but my mums a bit backwards and you wouldnt believe the battle I had to get her to stop thinking turbos were awful and no longer spontaneously combusted).

Just to reinforce what im working with here...she was pushing for an Astra 1.6 SXI, I may have lost my choice of a Scirocco but atleast I took that out of the equation too.

Well get your mum worrying about it, use £6k on a mint ATR, £1k on insurance and use the rest to 'treat' your old dear to a garage extension :p

I hate new Golfs and even I would pick a new Golf over an ATR, come on, be realistic, he wont go for an ATR :p

VTEC makes me a sad panda. As does the inside of a 98 Honda.

Ahh but you see im just seeing things from his mothers perspective, im actually on her side you see. It was a conscious decision to pick something with zero torques so the lad wont kill himself! Honet guv' :)

Thanks Meanboy, I really appreciate your concern for my safety :D. Seriously though its going to be between those and thats it. For the record we cant extend our garage any further...would have made it bigger when we built it if we could :S.

Out of those, the Golf. But i'd work on your Mum a bit more for the Scirocco. They're gorgeous cars and I don't see why the 1.4TSI wouldn't be a problem.

Shut up about the blinking Accord!

I like the Golf 1.4TSI. My Mum just bought the 120bhp version. Well built, nice interior and very refined. Much better than the Mk5 with which the Mk6 shares a lot of the underpinnings. The engine is excellent - more economical than the old 1.6 and it's got more poke.

Civic? Looks good but the styling will likely date. I'd take the Golf every time.

the civic is a lot nicer in looks, but i dont know the difference between the cars

even though i would still pick the civic easily :)

How is the Civic better looking than the new Golf? Are you blind?

The Golf is much better looking, from every angle. The Civic looks like a snail with chrome.

It'll be worth more when you sell it as well. Get the Golf 1.4TSI, although you'll be in a waiting list probably, they're quite popular. Get it in Reflex silver as well, best colour IMO.

the civic but in a different colour

but im am a honda fanboy when it comes to cars and aint to interested in german stuff unless its a audi
