as some of you may have seen in my recent build log/overclocking threads

i currently have a Biostar Tpower X58

i am happy with the board as it does 224 BCLK and runs everything i want it to

although it wont run my 2000mhz memory at the rated speed because the divider will not work


i now also have a Rampage Extreme 2

this is a board with much better support and a more comprehensive bios
there are some tasty Koolance full cover blocks for this board that match my GFX card blocks, the REII will certainly look great in my TJ07 [its too big for my fortress]

however - im worried it will not clock as well as my biostar

i know its stupid to concern myself with overclocking past 4.5GHz but i cant help thinking that my P6T deluxe was a bag of fail and this might go the same way

its not going to be one of those 'what board should i get' threads

i would just like to know which everyone would choose out of the two if you had both
 
You need to redefine your thread title...

That's not a horrible dilemma - that's the equivalent of a guy stuck in a strip joint, on his stag night, and can't decide whether to have a lap dance with the very pretty blonde or the voluptuous brunette first… :p

Getting back to your ‘horrible dilemma’ I would try the Asus (aka the voluptuous brunette) just to rule it out as it will probably eat at you if you don’t try it… ;)
 
Can you not experiment with the REII on plain air and see how it goes? if its good keep it if not get rid, or are you not wanting to open it up really?
I use the old rampage formula and whilst ppl on here seem to advocate the X48's arent as good as P45's, mine clocks very well (current clock is on new chip I just dropped in at this speed, everyhting is on auto, gonna tweak it next week when next set of days off comes round)
Also having done a quick search of other forums I can see ppl with BCLKs in excess of 224, having got through the "222 wall" various reports incl needing to set PCIE freq at 110 or higher to push through it but it is possible

Yeah, give the Rampage a go. If I was you, I'd definitely end up doing it in the end 'cos it would eat away at me.

Plus I prefer brunettes :D
 
plec - that is a very good analogy

i am by no means being ungrateful for being in possesion of these two great boards

i thought it would help if i got a few opinions and reasons to go with the rampage over the biostar [which has currently never missed a beat for me]

no - it wont fit

it goes in but the sata ports are at an angle and they are right next to the edge of the tray and a bit blocks it off

so it will work - just with no hard drives :D

my water cooling is mostly external now - so not a problem

will be selling the fortress soon to fund the watercooling gear in the TJ07

just need to decide which board goes and which one stays

Apart from a bit of time lost, you would be mad not to give it a try at the very least.

Its hard to resist a nice brunette, I think you should give the brunette a good performance testing :) and then share your thoughts, I'm sure plenty would also like to know blonde or brunette. If you get rid you might regret, I would keep both and have a threesome.
 
Are you sure it's the motherboard holding you back? Bearing in mind the memory controller is in on die with the i7, running the CPU at 4.5GHz is possibly stressing the CPU too much to run memory at 2000MHz too.

Only thing to do is suck it and see. Personally I'd go with the REII every day of the week and twice on sunday as the Biostar imo is the ugliest i7 board out atm.

Yeah, I know your not - my tongue was firmly in my cheek when posting.

I’ve followed your ‘Overclocking an i7 950 D0 - 4.8GHz+ - First Impressions’ thead – and can understand your reluctance to rip apart a rig that’s running near faultlessly at such impressive clocks. But, as you seem to have a character that has an innate urge to find that extra bit of speed out of any piece of hardware the Asus, by character default, it's definitely going to have to be tested. ;)

Not least, to satiate your aching need/search for that extra few hundred MHz but to also give the likes of us have an idea which mobo is the best choice…

It will be a b*stard if it doesn’t reward you with any overall improvements but it will be interesting to pick over your findings, regardless.

Good luck with it - brunnettes can be feisty.

I may have to do a build with the REII very soon as it's now dropped within the price range of a pending build i'm doing for a friend - that's on indefinite hold until the single PCB 295's come out.

Have you come to a decision - do you plan on ripping the guts out of your present system and giving it a go?

If you do/have I would be very interested in your findings as at only £50 more it looks a very tempting board over the P6T Deluxe v2.

the biostar isnt the prettiest board around - however it does clock ok so im not too fussed - plus i go for the 'hide the motherboard with hardware' approach

i have a cherry picked i7 D0
the chip can run ocz blade at 7-8-7-20-1T @ 2100MHz+ and still clock well
its the best one i have seen so far and i deal with 30+ 920 D0's a day
in short - there is no way it could be the chip

i have decided that the biostar is going now
its been a hard decision - even though i have read a couple of threads on other forums stating that a pci-e freq of 110+ can help bump the max bclk up.

i have tried this for hours on end to no avail

i think a change is in order

plus i have a set of these on the way...

my P6T deluxe V1 wasnt a patch on my biostar - thats what made me hesitant about going back to asus

plus the RE2's that i have used at work have all been significantly underwhelming compared to there cheaper X58 cousins

but i have taken the plunge and will give it a good thrashing
i am doing a full system rebuild into a new case soon
[bored of the Fortress FT01 already, it was never a TJ07 :D]

will post a build log in case central along with benchmarks etc

Thanks for the extra info regarding the Asus boards, appreciated. With the above in mind, i may take stock and look at a few more reviews of other boards - and await your findings on the REII.
