I know the question how to transfer VHS to DVD has been asked numerous times, but as far as I can tell, this post will be different.

I've got a couple of TV Series on VHS that I'm going to be transferring to DVD. But what I want to know is what's the best file format to rip to, to get the best quality for when transfered on to a DVD. The DVD will have a full menu system, etc. so just an exact rip from VHS to DVD won't work, I need the episodes seperated.

I also would like some ideas on software I can use to try and restore the footage, to a more original look. Can I just do this in Premier or something after I captured the footage?

Yup - recording television/films to VHS in the first place is actually illegal, but one of those illegal's that no-one cares about because everyone did it.

I had always thought that copying bought VHS was at the very least breaching copyright, if not actually illegal...not 100% though.

As for the OP's question, yes I would have thought AVI would be the best as well, though the files will be massive I would imagine.

Slight thread derail...Sirrel, do you have any tips on how you would clean up the footage using Premiere?

Not got a great deal of knowledge on restoration but you could use Premiere to sort out the colour correction, brightness, levels and contrast and then if you have a lot of time on your hands go into after effects and use the variety of tools to clean up the footage further by removing spots, scratches etc.

Thanks for the replies guys. I know the legal implications of this. But they are VHS' that I've paid for originally and will be ripping for personal use, just would prefer it to be more professional and it gives me valid experience. As the Videos were never put on DVD, I'm hoping no one will care that much. :-p

If you're using Premiere I'd just capture it as DV AVI. You'll be able to clean up the footage to some extent in Premiere too.

Using a camcorder to a Firewire port would capture at true DV avi [digital], how would one capture DV avi using composite inputs .ie analogue .Would the VHS signal not be a analogue signal ?.Using a TV card or other capture device from a VHS source would not be DV ?? or is there some other capture means??
