Anyone here recommend me a decent sat nav ?

Don't want to pay over £150 and not bothered in having the european maps.

Go!

well tom toms are best in uk, biggest support base for them, and they've just released uk one £149.99 with £20 cashback
other than that, garmin are ok, best detailed road maps and sattellites, but little support for them

^Eh what does support base have to do with it? Its all about the quality of mapping etc

I have a Garmin 250W, used to have a Tom Tom and it was nowhere near as good. Can thoroughly recommend Garmin.

support base ie, upgrades, new content and troubleshooting, don't get me wrong garmin have much better maps as the garmin people actually drive every road in the country over the year to make sure it's all accurate, but tomtom is generally seen by the public as the leading brand, proven by the fact people generally ask for a tomtom when in reality they just want a satnav, same as people wanting iPods not realising it's a brand name

also, garmin, are the leading brand in US mainly because it's used in the milatary for guidance systems for ships and the airforce, hence the uber sattelite quality

i bought a bluetooth satnav reciever from ebay for £30, i use it with both my phones, smartphone and not - works a treat :D

Indeed, my Garmin 255WT (or any of my Garmin units from the past) have lost their marbles and taken me to a completely wrong destination.

Updates are fast too through Garmin Web Updater as well as bug fixes via language updates and so on.

Painless install too and easy to navigate the menus.

my miss bought me a navman s30 i really wanted a tomtom (you know what women are like the man in the shop said) but this one hasn't got me lost yet.

A lot of GPS devices use the same SirfStar GPS chip so the only real difference is the software and map data. TomTom use Teleatlas which is meant to be better for Europe, Garmin use NavTeq which are better for the US.

buy an old navman icn 510/520 or mio plus a lot of different types of navman but you must look up which ones are supported, you can unlock them back to the windows operating system and install any satnav software, also you can watch avi and divx films play music, there is a playstation1 emulator, gameboy emulator and nes/snes emulator and there are some good games, age of empires 1 is great on it.they are great fun when unlocked. i have tried most of the different satnav software on it and find igo 8 to be best

Hi

I just bought a TomTom XL IQ Routes inc Euro Maps. Will let you know how that is when it arrives. I was previously using TomTom Navigator 6 for my PDA.

I've used both TomTom and Garmin products, while the TomTom is a more user friendly product with a more mainstream support the Navteq mapping on the Garmin's is better (oddly TomTom used it for the Ride products a few years back iirc). TomTom mapping would still try and get me to go round roundabouts that were removed 5+ years ago or down one way streets the wrong way that have been like that for at least 6 years now. That said i'm sure they will have improved over the last 18 months.

I used a Garmin nuvi 250 preloaded with UK/Europe with South African Maps (a couple of years out-dated) and it got me where I needed to go.

I went 6,000 KM and the coverage was more than adequate.

Used it a couple of times in the UK without fail too, the speed camera warmings etc were spot on, updates are not free though (Which is a bit of a crapper)

Oh, it also have maps of Channel Islands (where I live) Unlike TomTom.

This is exact reason why I've replaced my old TomTom PDA, as its very out of date...
