I've always wondered this and a post in the "no meat on monday" thread brought it up again.

We're constantly being told to use environmentally friendly carrier bags to take our food away and yet down every single frozen food aisle they have freezers that are open.

Surely this uses up massive amounts of energy to keep the food cold whilst all of that effort is wasted into the store? We get glared at for asking for a plastic bag whilst they've got rows of freezers constantly working harder than needed.

:s

Cold air sinks, that's true, but what of the hot air that fills it's place? Surely the compressor would have to come on less often if the lid was kept closed?

They could employ the jobshy to 'catch' this fallen cold air and put it back? Thus solving two problems in one stone:

1. Global warming.
2. Getting the workshy off benefits and back to work.

****ing genious!

I have no problem going to the local spar and sliding open the lid to get their frozen foods, why would anyone have a problem with sliding a door open to get their food?

Because this way it's easier to push your mother in law into the frozen peas and slide the lid shut when nobody's looking. If you tried this with a standup freezer, she'd simply fall out again.

Open fronted chilled sections and open topped freezers are used because we the buying public are too lazy to open them up, it was the result of reseach hence the current hideously inefficient system. If the government were really serious about cutting energy use they would simply outlaw stuff like this but they won't they would rather tax it.

It is also to do with isle space, you would have so many doors opening and left open it would cause problems.
Hence you might see the door type only on the widest isles.

oh yeh, plus its a lot easier to reach in and grab what you need with one hand. I remeber years ago they had lift up lids on some freezers, these were glass and heavy. You need 1 hand to hold the lid open and 1 to grab the item, so if you were rumaging in the freezer you needed 3 hands. Also I remeber some supermarkets had doors that slid back, again you need to hold them open. Plus how long before a small child got trapped in one and sued for millions. Easiest solution is to have them open, easier to restock, easier for shoppers.

Lucky we have 2 hands then isn't it.

Personaly I think super markets should just release wild animals into the store and when you enter you are strpped naked, oiled up, given a spear and a trolly and are forced to catch your food to the sound of pounding techno.
