Another NEC vs Dell thread? Which one for gaming?

Hi,
Im sure that there has been many threads about the best 24" for gaming :p.
Im now having second thoughts about the NEC mainly because i have heard a lot of complaints about the NEC having ghosting issues.

Also TBH i don't really like the look of the NEC it seems to be a little on the FAT side ;) (If anyone has any pics please upload! I can't seem to find any!)

I have narrowed it down to 2 of these monitors because they are in the same price range. The main use of the monitor will be for gaming.

Also is it true that the NEC won't be sold anymore? I just read it from another post about it being EOL or something.

I use my 2408WFP A01 for gaming (mostly FPS and RPGs) and I have never noticed any ghosting or input lag. The only thing I have noticed is the awesome image quality and customer support. I'm sure the NEC is just as good as they use very similar panels.

If you like the look of the Dell over the NEC then definately get it - its a brilliant investment, plus if you have any problems Dell are very quick to give you a new one withi9n one working day :D

Just because it is high compared to other monitors (mainly TNs) does not mean that it is "bad". I have used the monitor for over a year and I have not noticed any (I have had both A00 and A01 revisions). Have a read of this if you don't believe me.

Balance that with all the excellent features - it makes for wonderful monitor
 
cmndr andi, I've read and been told that the Dell's wide gamut can mean that colours can seem oversaturated. Can this be calibrated so that it is not as noticeable, or is it a fundamental part of the technology? Also, do you find the Dell to be too bright as I've heard that even on 5% brightness it can be too bright. One last thing, is the backlight pretty even and what is this about a 'pink tinge'? I'm assuming all of this was fixed with the A01 version?
 
Not sure about oversaturated , but I moved to mine from a 19in BenQ TN panel and the difference in colour would astound you - In my eyes it looks lovely.

Yea- the factory calibration is a bit off - but you easily fix that and get it pretty dead on.

In terms of brightness i'm such a philistine - I have mine nice and bright so my retinas get burnt by all the FullHD goodness :)

The backlight is not perfectly even - but its better than most panels I have seen.
 
Thanks very much for the quick response cmndr andi. Do you lose a lot of the Full HD goodness if you turn down the brightness? I say this as I've always tend to turn the brightness down by quite a lot on monitors.
 
Lol - not really, the colours look lovely with brightness low.

I just have my dell next to a bright 32in TV - so I turned it up to match. Probably not the wisest move - but it looks great.

Wow, you have some serious tech there :cool:. I can understand wanting to see those babies in all their glory. I think I now need to make a quick decision about whether I should go for the Dell or the NEC, before the NEC is out of stock. :eek:

Seems like i should wait a little longer :(. Maybe NEC decide to release a newer version :p. If not i will go for the Dell.
 
One last thing guys. I've only have an Analog VGA port at the moment. Is there such a thing as a VGA to DVI or HDMI cable (:o:)) that I can buy for either of these two monitors? If not is the picture quality a lot worse with VGA as apposed to DVI or HDMI? Thanks very much in advance as always.
 
Well the dell has a VGA port (along with 2 DVI-D, 1 HDMI, 1 display port, 1 composite, 1 component and an s-video). You may as well plug it into that with a vga cable - you won't get much better picture with a converter and a dvi/hdmi cable.

It is the worst monitor for lag out of 20 screens including IPS, PVA, MVA etc. In fact you would struggle to buy a screen with worse lag be it TN or not. :eek:

The NEC has a VGA port too and comes with the cable, so don't let that sway you towards the Dell. I really do think that the NEC is as close to perfect as you can get and would choose it over the Dell every time as I already have done ;)

I'd jump on one of the remaining NEC monitors while you still can.
 
greebo, you are indeed right, I do not contest that. However, I have never noticed and lag, so what's the problem? Personally, I judge monitors on subjective testing not numbers.
