Hey guys, I'm just about to get my new blu ray player up and running with my new build and was curious whether anyone knew if the picture quality of John Carpenters The Thing is any good? I'm also getting Blade Runner and Dark City which are meant to have particuarly good conversions.

Well as luck has it I bought the LG GGC-H20L Blu-Ray Reader & HD-DVD ROM from OC a couple days back so I could try and find a cheap hd-dvd copy. Thanks for the reply.

It's a shame they haven't released an original directors cut of Blade Runner on Blu-ray, I prefer that cut to the new final cut.

I thought the new Blade Runner had all versions of it? In fact I'm pretty sure it does. It even has a cutting room floor cut or something similar.

It does. Have the SE version at home, the one that came in the little briefcase

Really? Man thats really good news for me, I like the new cut but the latest soundtrack doesn't stand as strong as the original. Thanks for the info :)

I have the Thing on Blu Ray and it is superb. I also have the DVD and have compared the 2 and the difference is amazing. There's a scene at the start of the film where the dog runs past a drum. On the DVD you can't rally make out the writing that clearly but the drum's writing on the Blu ray is crystal clear.

I have it on dvd and have a great upscaling player so i dont buy films i already have... I have also been wondering about the quality of older films on blu ray. I already have the Aliens Legacy box set but would be tempted with a blu ray edition.. only problem is on Aliens (my fav) i would love the picture qualty to be better but the noise in the film is what makes a lot of the atmosphere...

How old are we talking? I have the original 1953 version of The Day The Earth Stood Still and apart from it being 4:3 the quality is superb.

Blade Runner is a brilliant transfer worth getting if you like the film.

Dark City is an awful transfer, it suffers from excessive DNR, which has removed all the detail and resulted in the film looking really plastic especially the faces, there is no detail to them.

Man I went in town today to pick up some blu-rays from the shops and was totally blown away by their price! Some were in the region of £25! Geeez definatly looks like I'll be ordering off the net

I bought Band of Brothers Blu Ray for £24.99 last week off the net. I went to HMV over the weekend and they were charging £50 for it. I'd rather watch Big Brother, Eastenders and all these Karaoke pop idol programs than buy a Blu Ray in HMV.
