First problem experienced with the vectra.

Driving to work this morning, went to change into 6th on the dual carriageway on it wouldnt go. No 6th gear.

Tried 5th, 4th and 3rd .. al fine. Limped the last remaining mile to work and tried 1st and 2nd. all ok again, same with reverse.

Looked under the bonnet, and the gear selection mechanism is working fine, so it appears to be some problem with the gearbox.

Took it to vauxhall (100 yards from work) who've taken the car off me and want to strip the gearbox out to investigate.

Thankfully its under manufacturers warranty till November this year, and is less than 10 months since i bought it so is covered under network q warranty as well.

Just got to sit back and wait now. and hope they dont claim its due to abuse. As i have been enjoying my car..... :( But ive made a point of being mechanically sympathetic, waiting till its warmed up etc.. so i dont see why it could be a problem. Just me being nervous never having had anything like this before ..

Damn unlucky! Well lucky your covered under warranty though! Doubt they can claim abuse for 6th gear? not unless you do top speed runs a lot :p

Was gonna say, if it was 1st / 2nd or even 3rd then i could understand them trying to go 50/50 on abuse, but with it being 6th gear, i doubt they can!

Unless, Though I know nothing about car gearboxes, on my bike 2nd and 6th are on the same bit and selector fork, and when my 6th went 2nd has mangled also was a miracle it engaged either!

im just being paranoid

this is my first performance car and the first time ive had anything seriously go wrong apart from wear / tear and rust etc..

so just bricking it a bit :(

I wouldnt go to default pant filling yet, last gearbox problem I had in a car was on my Escort Si, wouldnt select a couple of gears (cant remember which long time ago), was a £10 pound part and a couple of hours work.

that sounds like the gear selection mechanism.

Unfortunately we checked that and ruled it out as its only 6th that it wont select.

Thanks for the reassurance though. I think i am just pant filling because i heard the words "strip gearbox".

Don't worry about its. It's covered under warranty so consider yourself lucky. If you want 'bricking it' we did the cambelt change on the Zed today without the 'special tools which are essential for a successful cambelt change' - told my Dad this and he said 'reeaaalllly' - Obviously he had to prove them wrong. :p

I had this on my old G. They replaced the gearbox under warranty and then forgot to plug the inspection hole meaning transmission fluid sprayed all over my engine bay.

Thanks GM, lol

Oh, and isnt the gear linkage system on the VXR cable select (as in, 6 independant cables) like it was on the older Astra GSi?

I've not heard good things about the gearboxes on the VXR, my mates Astra VXR shredded it's gearbox about 5k miles after he had a bluefin remap. Ok there was a bit more power going through it but it had only done 20k miles (and he doesn't drive it that hard as he's worried about fuel )

Hope it all gets sorted quickly for you, thing is even if you do give it a bit of a abuse its a 280hp car its supposed to get some every now and then and I bet you dont use the gears as much as you would in an NA car so sure there will be no come back from that so stop your worrying, what have you got as a loaner?

no loan or courtesay car :(

they said all the cars they had were booked out all week. Im going to borrow my dads nissan micra 1.3 :(

didnt see the point in kicking up a fuss. i can entirely believe they've got no courtesy cars when i drop in on them without any prior warning and then the technician takes the car off me. Whether or not i complaint depends on how it goes.
