What are these cameras for?

Noticed yesterday that loads of cameras have sprung up on the m4, m5, m32 on top of bridges. 1 per lane so a whopping 6 per bridge and even 7 on one of the m32 bridges due to slip road. They look a bit like cctv cameras but on a large poll bottom of pole is yellow top is white, so really high up. They look temporary.

What the hell are they for? Initially I thought maybe some sort of tax sting. but surly one camera could cover 3 lanes. surly they haven't stuck all hem up just to measure raffic volume?

Traffic master cameras are usually blue aren't they?

This suggests some CCTV cameras are being installed, but they don't normaly have one per lane. However it also mentions temporary 50mph speed limits, and the SPECS cameras that have been installed on the A38 recently for roadworks are yellow...

We've got cameras at every entrance and exit of my village and the village next door. Supposedly to catch out untaxed cars :s

I think they might be specs. They match the description fairly well, and I heard they've recently been installed on the M4 and M5 for the temporary 50mph limit.

Those temporary ones? with the huge concreted area that resembles a permanent structure?

Yes, the Highways Agency website says it's temporary, but they sure look very permanently installed to me :( On the plus side my economy seems to have improved a little :)

If you have a big gantry to hold cameras over a dual carriageway it has to be made pretty secure I suppose, I could see less secure structures being pushed over or moved :D

These do look temporary. No speed restrictions on the roads at the moment though and look nothing like normal specs cameras.

I really hope they aren't specs, you could get like 9 points in about 2 miles

I saw 3 cameras on a bridge over the M1 today (unmanned), near Sheffield/Rotherham. All on tripods. A plain white van on the verge next to them. Is this the same thing?

where abouts on the M4? and M5?

They are basically all around the M4/M5 interchange at Bristol, definitely not like usual SPECS or Trafficmaster cameras. They've been putting them up last week and this week. They just look like a small round CCTV camera on a telescopic pole, one for each lane.
