Hey guys

I will be staying in Bankok for 2 nights on the way to Australia and have been investigating the hotel situation there, it seems with me landing at the main airport (BKK) you either have to get a hotel near the airport which doesn’t seem like the most exciting idea, or get one in Bankok centre..

So I’ve been looking on Expedia and there is a range of prices, one that’s stood out is the millennium Hilton because there doing a special where you pay for one night and get the second night free, see the link below.

So for 2 nights its only £128 which is well below the £80 a night we had budgeted, and for the quality of the hotel is cheap over all, two things concern me however, the first is if I stay in the Hilton are all the drinks going to be absolutely extortionate? I know I could go out of the hotel and not drink there at all but it’s a concern.

The other is getting to the centre of Bankok from the airport is a 60 minute journey supposedly, I can’t see that been cheap in a taxi so I’ve been investigating the bus services which can be seen below.

Any opinions from veteran Bankok travellers?

I don't remember it taking an hour for us to get to the city centre. Remember everything in Thailand is pretty cheap we had a 30 minute cab ride accross the city for £5 last summer. Most of the major hotels run shuttle services to and from the airport as it can be a right pain to get a taxi driver to take you where you want to go instead of to his mates doss house.

is it about an hour as it is a new airport which is further away

cant remember how much we paid for a cab, but it wasnt a lot.

take a taxi from outside the airport, DO NOT go with a toute that jumps on you as soon as you walk outside the customs.

outside is an official rank

This - you will get completely had if you try to get a taxi inside the airport. Last time I was there we ended up staying in the middle of China town which was an experience. Two days is not a whole bunch of time but it is enough to go visit most of the temples and be kindly taken to one of the many places where the make jewelery - because that's totally where we wanted to go...

We stayed at the Grand China Princess Hotel - not bad - it was clean but nothing to write home about - http://www.grandchina.com/ and they seem to have some pretty good deals on at the moment so it might be worth looking into. We got a suite with a pano view over the city - it was extremely cool.

Oh also keep in mind that it's a big dirty city that is really warm - most hotels can sort you with aircon cars for sod all.

You could get a taxi from BKK to Khao San road for about 500b and look for a big sign that says D & D's, the rooms are pretty basic but cheap and clean

Stay in the Nai Lert next to the British Embassy. It's an excellent hotel and is very close to some of my favourite restaurants in Bangkok. It's also where that actor bloke was found dead last week.

Can't recommend it enough.

this is where we always stay, about £12 a night or something

i get the feeling the OP wants something a bit more upmarket though

of which there are lots to choose.

well the accommodation when I get to Australia is not costing me anything so I figured if get somewhere for around the £80 a night mark when I am there and that deal is well below that figure anyway including breakfast.

The fact the place your on about is only £12 however makes me wonder if I should look a bit harder

A limo from the airport to hotel costs hardly anything, I think I stayed at the Shangri-La.

I stayed there my first time in Bangkok, it's an excellent hotel and I really enjoyed my stay there

Yeah , just though i'd throw it in :) it's more fun down there imo

There's some excellent hotels in Bangkok and I can recommend the Shangri-la for a decently priced 5*

When I stayed there I upgraded to something called the Horizon Club which got me a slightly better rooIm and other stuff like free drinks in the Horizon bar, buffet breakfast ,etc iirc it didn't cost a great deal for the upgrade and was well worth it

Ive stayed in a lot of hotels in Bangkok (see location). I found that the perfect location is around Siam/Pratunam, or close by on Suhkumvit Road, theres so many to choose from, but in my experience the best hotel for the price you pay is the Amari Watergate. Ive stayed in a lot of Amari hotels and they have all been excellent. Or check out the Novotel in Siam Square, great location. The Siam City is also nice and a 2 min walk from the sky train.

Well, I wouldn't dream of paying anything like that for a hotel, so I can't help you on that front. My hotel was £18 a night and was perfect for my needs.

On the taxi front, when you leave international arrivals and you've passed through customs and all the usual checks, you'll see a load of people offering you limo rides into Bangkok centre - they cost anywhere between £15 and £20 - so if you're feeling flash, grab one of them. Otherwise, when you walk out of that little section, turn left and head for the main exit. You should see a little table with a couple of Thai women sitting there - that's the normal taxi rank - you get a chit and off to the right the taxi drivers wait for you. However, you must make sure you ask for a meter-taxi - tell the women and tell the taxi driver - if you don't, they'll try to charge you the same as the limo-taxis - a metered ride into BKK city centre from the new airport shouldn't really cost more than £8 to £10 (my record was just over £6) - that includes if they cover the toll motorways.

Rather than a room I had my own suite for very little in a good location. Find some old bangkok threads and i've posted pictures and stuff in them.
