Microsoft's new Anti-Virus, 'Morro'

If it proves popular then the free model works, if it isn't popular they're hardly going to start charging for it methinks.

But for how long?

Forever I guess

If it proves popular then the free model works, if it isn't popular they're hardly going to start charging for it methinks.

The BBC article says it'll be a pretty basic anti virus program (e.g. no parental controls etc.), which is actually a good thing IMO. Maybe they'll release a pay-for package with all the parental controls and everything else the average anti virus suite includes.

if windows defender is anything to go by...this wont be worth it :p

This is based on Microsoft's Enterprise security suite called Forefront so is a very good product.

Morro replaces OneCare and Defender.

The leaked version updated definitions fine as well.

Installed 64bit version on my Vista main install. Perfect, didn't even need to restart like with AVAST.

The great plus point here also is that during or after installation I did not need to go through any custom install to just install resident shield and maybe network shield like I do with AVAST and then turn off skins/additional languages and then go into the AVAST CPL and turn off the godawful sounds and some other settings!

The only downer is that this uses more RAM than AVAST when idle, the service uses 63MB idle whereas AVAST's services in total consumed 13.4MB.

Not an issue of course since I can surely spare 49.6 more MB from my 8096MB total RAM :p

I really like the UI as well, it's very pleasing to the eye, and this is from a die hard minimal skin AVAST user!

Oh and the fact it's 64bit is a plus point too.

I imagine it will be bundled in with future operating systems in order to destroy antivirus software companies, mind you if it gets rid of norton that might not be such a bad thing after all...
Possibly but not in Europe as the EU will be fining Microsoft again for anti-competitive practices and probably forcing it's exclusion from the operating system(s) !

yeah i can't see them being able to bundle it in to windows, why the heck not is crazy... they should be able to have there own av and whatever else...

Yeah, god forbid people/business want choice and don't want to have to sit and remove a load of crap they don't want.

there is no way on earth that it will be bundled, it will be on windows update no doubt but it will an addon for sure.

i have it running on my windows7, it validated and installed fine, but can't get it to update, i think it might be my work line though as it's highly filtered

Agreed, I like Forefront. Looks promising.

And I doubt they'll charge for it in the future. The reason they're doing this is to get rid of the stigma that Windows is insecure.

I've installed it on 5 PCs (Win7 32bit x3, Vista Home 32bit, Vista Ultimate 64bit) at home now, 4 of which update fine but the 5th, my sister's laptop running a wireless G connection does not update, says it could not update whereas my netbook also running Windows 7 but on Wireless N updates perfectly fine.

All in all a great app, on my dad's PC it even found a trojan that AVAST missed on a full scan:

(Yep I've given his PC Firefox yet he likes IE better, IE8 as well no less!)

Also the 64bit version seems to be very resource friendly, I rebooted 1hr 32mins ago and enabled the cpu time column in taskman:

Could just be a false positive though.

I'm more likely to stay away until tests have been run on it for a while.

Im happy with AVG and will continue to use if for the foreseeable future. :)

I'd be more inclined to say it's not a false positive as my dad was quizzing me about "Acrobat 9 serials" the other day and told me that he "found one" hence why I decided to RDP in (concurrent sessions ***!) and ran an AVAST scan which only found a few IE temp Internet files browser exploits!

That's why your pop should have been useing firefox, with adblocker and no script addons.

If you need to enable scripts to view a site it's not worth viewing.

Yes like I said, he should, but he prefers IE and as for scripts, you need to run scripts on many sites or they just won't work which is why noscript is a pain (plus the fact that noscript developer secretly whitelisted ad sites in Adblock's whitelist for profit recently).

Anyway...

Testing out with Eircom's virus test files

If I try to open the zip file it appears that Morro has suspended any access to it:

Not too bad, expectedly.
