Microsoft's new Anti-Virus, 'Morro'

will try this out

when anyone asks me to reccoment an AV, the only ones I mention are nod32/kasper, as those are the only ones I have confidence in, without having popups and bull etc

Should try out AVAST, it's the best free one with daily updates, sometimes several times a day.

Only bit to note is during install you want to do a custom install and not install some of the extensions that you won't use such as outlook scanner, LAN scanner, web filter etc. I only used the resident shield and nothing more.

If I try to open the zip file it appears that Morro has suspended any access to it:

Not too bad, expectedly.

Surely it should warn you that it may be a virus, but still allow you access if you want? What about false positives?

This looks really quite promising, although it can't be bundled with windows due to the latest EU ruling etc. I think this might be a good step in the right direction with MS providing an addon disk with it's operating system with optional and recommended installs instead.

I'll wait for the development to carry on until I pass over as NOD32 is doing the trick for me at the moment (unlimited trial accounts from their website do work wonders ;) )

It's for all OSes (different installer for XP and 32bits).

The link I gave above has downloads for each version.

JUMPURS I guess it doesn't allow access because the whole zipfile contains test signatures that's why but it does warn you as per first screenshot in the post.

Gonna give this a go. Always liked NOD32 but was never willing to pay for it, and wasn't happy with the detection rates of the free stuff. Hopefully this is a happy medium!

If you need to enable scripts to view a site it's not worth viewing.

That is complete poppycock. Ever tried GMail without scripting? Facebook? eBay? None of them work properly, and strangely enough, they're all pretty popular.

Keeping an eye on this!... Long Term Avast 'Fanboy' and (till it got the bloat) AVG... if this is good and integrates into Vista then it might be worth a bash!...

:)

Integrates perfectly fine in Vista 64 :)

Give it a try, you don't lose anything by trying it!

Gonna give this a go. I'm one of those people who uses the 'common sense' excuse for not having AV, so I'll be interested what this finds :p.

EDIT: Well the initial 'Quick' scan found zilch. The program itself is nice and small, clear and nippy, how an AV should be. Common sense *** :p.

Microsoft confirmed today that they plan to release a public beta of Microsoft Security Essentials (formerly codenamed Morro) on June 23.

The free anti-virus product will begin with a beta program next week and an updated beta version over the summer period. Company officials also confirmed that Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) will be launching in fall this year. We have learned that Microsoft is targeting September or at the latest to have the anti-virus software available for the October 22 Windows 7 launch.

Formerly known as Morro, the software giant plans to replace its Windows Live OneCare offerings with MSE later in the year. Microsoft will discontinue retail sales of OneCare on June 30 so you won't be able to purchase it in store after that date, but consumers will still be able to purchase the product after 30 June directly from Microsoft.

The beta will be available next Tuesday in limited form, Microsoft is targeting it at the first 75,000 US, Israel and Brazil based customers. A Chinese beta will be available in mid July. Similar to the Windows 7 beta it is likely the company will expand the offering to meet demand.
