Just lately I have become totally hooked on the electric guitar solo. Mainly in the power/prog etc. metal genre. There's just something about that key change, the riffs die away and the solo instrument ascends over the keyboards and/or orchestra.

Particularly worth hearing are Edenbridge, most of their tracks have a solo passage, the last Therion album had a few good ones too.

Anyone else get worked up over guitar solos or is it just me? One of the reasons I've now virtually stopped listening to trance/techno is the lack of guitar work or solo passages.

Dragonforce gets a vote from me in here.

Coheed and Cambria have some sweet moments too.

I am also a bit of a guitar head myself :D its prob the main reason I cant stand RnB2 and trance etc. No soul to it imo :p

Thanks for the links.

Just to clarify I was thinking more of the melodic type guitar solos in power metal and rock rather than heavy metal. The ones that just suddenly step out and smack you in the face with their beauty!

Saw Gary Moore live at wembly at the strat pack concert, he had the crowd on their feet.

Mindblowing guitarist.

Genre-wise it might be your cup of tea, but the solo/instrumental section of Darkest Hour's "Doomsayer" blows me away every time. Some fantastic melodic guitar playing and sweep picking.

While the actual song kicks ass as a whole, check out from 2.35 - 3.55 :

Im not a big fan of The Human Abstract but this solo me likes... from 2:40.

Over the years ive noticed the backing riff and drums make one hell of a difference to solos.

Anything by Darkest Hour is immense.

HOW HAVE I NOT HEARD OF DARKEST HOUR BEFORE?! Aargh I hate it when bands of the exact style I like the most just completely slip by me :(

The solo from 3:00 onwards in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMav6MtY46Q is one of my favourite of all time though. Short but sweet.

And a couple of obscenely good instrumental songs from IF:

<3 dual lead guitars :D
