RMA Time? - 4890

I have 4 12v rails @ 18a so thats bad? i wish someone had told me this in the thread i posted about 4890 power consumption and my psu last week.

Good job i can't really afford a new psu. Damn it.

Ok guys, spec me a psu for under £100

I have been running some tests on the vddc using GPU-Z, and here are some interseting facts.

Underload it uses a full 58a when @ default clocks

clocked right down to 500/600 it uses 30a but it still crashes. my psu with 4 12v rails @ 18a should be able to handle that!

So now i don't think it is power, and is probably a faulty card. I don't know, anything else i should try?

another interesting thing is that the Vddc voltage goes down from 1.3v to just over a 1 volt sometimes, maybe its an inconsistent voltage being sent that makes it hang, which would explain why the clocks don't seem to make any difference.

Do you think over volting the pci-e slot would help?

atikmdag Driver stopped responding message?
This is 99% driver error.
What os are u using and which catalyst have you tried?

Hey crazymofo16321,

Would you reset your CMOS and run your system at stock please, for trouble-shooting purposes! :)

If everything works perfectly while the system is at standard speeds then your closer to finding the problem (i.e weak PSU, bad overclock etc).

i already have. I've cleared the cmos, upgraded the bios all the other stuff.

interstingly when i overclock my cpu, its fine with the GTX but the 4890 hates it and quits faster, sometimes before even loading a level in crysis for example. On stock i can play about half a minute to a minute.

@D13 Its not a driver issue. I have experienced it on both vista 64 and win xp 32 using different catalyst drivers.

im back on XP now btw.

Sorry I couldn't see where you said that.

If your system is not stable playing games at stock speed and your system is not boling hot then it does sound like a flagging PSU! :(

For these situations a PSU Tester is worth its weight in gold, I know its not the quickest solution for you but you will get plenty of use from it in the future.

PSU are normal hardware and as such are prone to failure as much as any other piece of hardware, if there is the slightest chance you suspect the PSU then test it to remove it from the trouble-shooting process.

I do suspect the psu, i've got reason to suspect everything.

But nothing happened until i put the gfx card in... the psu was fine and is fine with the 9800gtx (the crashes i had before in dx10 were probably due to overvoltage i had setup for the 4890).

I mean, it seems like the psu cant take the 4890, but i've reduced the clocks down until its using less power than my 9800 and it still happens.

I think i'll RMA the mother tommorow, see what overclockers think, at worst its a tenner plus re-delivery, and £100 on a new PSU. At best full refund or replacement that works!

I dont suspect the memory very much, but i'm going to test it overnight. If thats shot i'll be quite relieved as its not much money for memory.
