SPL Season 2008/2009 thread

well for your information its used to describe protestants , why do you think they call hearts fans diet h ? also its used in belfast to describe protestants and not in a nice way, there has also been a conviction in glasgow for a religiously aggravated breach of the peace involving the word .

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/s...fa-cup-final-night-court-told-86908-20833881/ if that still doesnt convince you dave visit any rangers forum on the internet and ask them their opinion on this word .

No it isn't. I'm a Protestant, so are all my family and friends - some of whom support Rangers - and we call Rangers fans h*ns and always have and we certainly don't have a problem with Protestants :p

Hearts fans are called diet h*ns because their behaviour is akin to that of Rangers fans.

If you take the time to look at the intricacies of that case, you will see that it isn't for use of the word h*n.

And I wont be visiting any Rangers forums as Rangers fans on the Internet are sticklers for coming up with rubbish like this.

I just don't think you should be throwing out accusations of sectarianism at people who don't care two hoots about what religion you are.

Because Celtic and Rangers are footballing rivals and it's a derogatory word for the other teams fans.

I'm not saying you need to like it, just there's no need to try and conjure up a religious angle to anything you don't like.

Irish Republicans have been known to refer to British security forces as "Huns", notably in songs such as "London's Derry" which begins Come on out ye British H come on out without your guns. Unionists are sometimes referred to as "Hs" by Nationalists as an insult, perhaps due to the fact that many Unionists see themselves as British. A probably related usage is observed in football, where Celtic fans (some of whom are traditionally supporters of Irish Nationalism) often refer to Rangers or their fans (most of whom are traditionally supporters of Unionism) as "Hs" or "the Hs". Similarly, in Belfast the mainly Irish Nationalist supporters of Cliftonville F.C. refer to the traditionally Unionist fans of Linfield F.C. as "Hs". Due to the fact that Unionists are almost exclusively Protestant, the term 'Hn' is also perceived by some as a religious slur (although whether it is intended as such is debatable).
ive experienced it myself in belfast mate, im making nothing up rest assured. :)

You can post all the quotes from various Internet pages and supposed bodies you want, like I said, anyone from Glasgow knows the reality of the situation here is that it has no religious connotation.

Anyway, I just wanted to mention it as a sidenote as it isn't very nice for someone to be labelled sectarian like you were doing so can we drop it and get back to football.

Protestants refer to Catholics disparagingly as "fenians," a secret rebel society dating from the mid-1900s, or "taigs" (origin unclear), while Protestants are "hs" (possibly because of the link between Protestantism and Germany).

Murtagh managed to measure the effects on everyday life of the frontiers marked with graffiti saying 'Kill All Taigs' (Catholics) or 'Kill All Hs' (Protestants).

dont think i labeled jock sectarian , i only said the word can be :)

I had to quote myself because you failed to read and/or understand this part.
ive supplyed enough evidence for any reasonable person to take a long hard look at the h word , im also a rangers season ticket holders who has followed the bears home and abroad for the last 32 years , which i believe gives me the right to speak from experience, now i would never claim to speak for all the rangers supporters that ive met over the years but i can assure you that a large proportion of rangers fans believe there is a sectarian element to the h word .

I just wanted to mention it as a sidenote as it isn't very nice for someone to be labelled sectarian like you were doing
could you please point out to me where in this thread i labled jock sectarian ?

never said you represented anyone just explained to you why i think the use of the h word is unaceptable on this forum , why would you want to use a sectarian word to describe rangers on this forum anyway .

dont think i did compare celtic and wba , only said mobray got wba relegated , dont realy understand your point here ? are you saying wba is a bigger job than celtic and the celtic fans expectations will be some how lower than
wba,and you think managing celtic will be less of a challenge?
did celtic get their first choice manager ? no , mobray was at best the third choice.Ramos, Hodgson, strachan (coventry relegated 2001 sacked) and Le guen , which one got their team relegated the season before they took up their new jobs ?

Are you being deliberately obtuse or are you just hard-of-thinking?

You're right, you really don't understand my point. Show me where I said you compared WBA to Celtic?

What makes you think Mowbray was third choice?

Mowbray didn't 'get his team relegated'. They got relegated despite Mowbray. It's not like a Newcastle situation where bad management took them down.

Dave, Rangers fans decided to turn this word into a slur in retaliation for fans of your club complaining to everyone and anyone who would listed that the term/phrase "fenian" meant "catholic" when clearly it didn`t.

It resulted in our signature song "hello hello" being banned by Uefa.

In retaliation, Rangers fans got together and decided that we should be similiarly offended but something that wasn`t really that offensive but would even things up from an offendedness point of view. :)

Personally i`m delighted fans of your club get a taste of their own medicine when they are charged under the aggravation by prejudice bill for using this totally benign word.

Personally i don`t really care about the word. I never gave it a second thought til "Hello Hello" was banned. If you want to call me it, i really wouldn`t be too bothered as long as it was used in a joking way that football rivals often do. Much the same way "fenian" was.

Because of the actions of your fellow fans, i can go and complain to a Policeman if you call me a "hun" and you will be charged with religious aggravation. Even poor old Jock Dodds is a sitting duck if he walks up to me with a "hun" phrase :D

I reckon your fellow fans should have thought it through a bit more before the mass "we`re offended" campaign. :D

Tadgers. ;)

Now now Mr Gray, we both know you used to get your panties all bunched up when the h word was thrown into the mix. The evidence is probably only a quick 'search' away.

Famine song IS racist says judge -

"(Famine Song lyrics) are racist in calling upon people native to Scotland to leave the country because of their racial origins"

Can't Rankgers supporters come up with songs that are about themselves and not a derogatory jab at others?

Jock i usually go commando so leave my pants crinkly pants out of this. ;)

As my esteemed brother in arms Lord Fletch has already suggested, "parity" is all we seek.

Nothing more.

Can you lot not pack it in? Another SPL thread being derailed by Old Firm fans' bickering.

What ever happened to freedom of speech mate?

Isn`t that what forums are for?.

Surely it`s more sensible to have a reasoned and sensible debate about issues rather than sweep them under the carpet?.

I see nothing in the recent posts where any disrespect has been shown?. (which is a change). :)

i`m sure it`ll stay reasonable, intelligent and resepctful til Oddie McFugginugly appears.

Ooops, spoke too soon. :D

Being Irish is a race? :D

I`ve heard it all now. :D

Explain how a Western European Caucasian can be racist towards another Western European Caucasian.

Brilliant.

Edie, you never fail to entertain. :)

Hail the new messiah apparently.....

Attacking football doesnt mean winning football ;)

I remember the dirge we were served up during Tommy Burn`s reign in charge.C*ltic played great etc, Rangers were lucky etc etc.

9 Titles etc etc. :D

Youre 100% right. Walter Smiths and Martin O`Neils style of football was/is hellish to watch yet it brought/brings success.

Im looking forward to Monkey Heid`s cavalier flowing Football. :D
