Breaking news: FOTA to form breakaway F1 Championship!

The circumstances are different, but this is IRL and Cart all over again. And look what happened to them again this year.

Bernie needs to leave along with Max. They are too senile to hold a rational debate over anyone's future let alone that of F1.

Mixed feelings about this, like others have said it's probably unlikely it will happen and it's just forcing Mosley and Bernie to back done. It would be sad to see if the F1 name go if this does go through with the end to it's history, but then a new series without Mosley and Bernie interfering could be great. If they do breakaway it has the potential to be great, or just to fall flat on it's face, either way please please be on the BBC!

at last! there are plenty of great tracks out there that they can race on, and thats presuming that most of the current line up dont jump ship as well.

f1 at lemans?

Will it be in HD?! :D

As has been said before we are now playing hard ball. Setting up a new series will cost a fair whack of money and hopefully FIA/FOM will try and align their goal with FOTAs goal so that a new series isn't necessary.

All in all I think good to the teams. It seems to me that for too long a degree of bullying has gone on by the FIA so giving the team more say will hopefully make a more stable series where the rules and regulations don't change with every menstrual cycle that Max has.

Heading out to Silverstone at 9am so will be interesting to hear what others think of this on the ground!

Wow, to be honest I didn't think it would ever get this far. I thought they would have reached a compromise by now but it seems not. Ah well... a FOTA race series with proper race tracks could be awesome. ;)

"There's only one thing worse than being talked about; not being talked about".

I still can' see them breaking away. It's just another move in a game of chess, where no one wins and they'll both make compromises.
100% on the money.

Incidentally, has anyone managed to miss the news that the Silverstone F1 GP is being shown live on BBC1 this weekend? ;)

Are FOTA going to be any better then the FIA?

Is this just going to happen all over again when one of the big players throws a hissy fit because they can't spend their way to the top?

I dont think it will happen its another 2003..
BUT if it does who will replace the FIA? Who will Write all the rules? And Who will govern them?

If it does happen I hope ITV is in there like a shot because if Sky get it F1 will die

I think it is all politics and another way for the FOTA to put pressure on the FIA to accept their proposals.

If it is true there will be two crappy series next year.

this is epic news, im pretty suprised bernie hasnt commented yet...

I think this can only be good for the sport... we can have silverstone again next year, and who knows, maybe they will do 2 races in the UK with this series. Id love to see adelaide back on the calander.

but i cant see bernie not sorting this out, as he stands to loose the most.

Hmmm mixed feelings on this one. Part of me thinks a break away series could work and will be better for the teams, fans, etc and take a lot of the cost (Bernie) out of the sport. On the other hand, the FIA haven't done a bad job up until now and both series could turn out crap.

Still up in the air atm so no doubt we'll find out what the FIA will respond with this weekend.

Can the FIA actually sue Ferrari over failure to race? Surely it would not be proper for them to sue a car maker over this

yeap, but there is nothing to really stop Ferrari participating in F1 next year with a budget of pennies, no sponsors, no hospitality and a donkey of a car. Put in 1 lap quali and 1 lap in the race then pack up.

BBC F1 pundit and former team boss Eddie Jordan said it might ultimately need Mosley to announce he is not seeking another term of office to resolve F1's civil war.

One key aspect to this whole drama is the role of Max Mosley.

Max's campaign to change the privacy laws in relation to the media following his "outing" by the News of the World as a fan of S&M is unlikely to have made him a hero in the media. Quite aside from their joy at any drama as a means to sell more papers and/or attract more viewers and listeners, the media would be unlikely to back Max. I can see him being a casualty of this conflict.

As to the potential structure for any FOTA breakaway series, there are other "off-the-shelf" models such as A1GP which I believe has no connection with the FIA. Additionally, FOTA has had a number of years to think this thing through and need not carry all the baggage (a possible reference to Bernie Ecclestone) with which the FIA is encumbered.

I still believe that a compromise will be found, leaving more power in the hands of FOTA without resulting in Bernie having to sleep out in the doorway of Superdrug huddled up alongside his old mucker Mad Max :D

As much as I would like to see them escape the politics of F1 I cannot see it happening, they pretty much have the FIA by the balls though. :p

If they did breakaway it would be nice to see the classic circuits such as Silverstone, Magny-Cours and Hockenheim back on the calendar, circuits built for racing as opposed to catering for sponsors.

Wow, just seen this. I can't wait to see what FIA do now, as no matter how many new teams wish to enter, Formula 1 simply won't survive without any of the big names. Surely they'll have to give in to FOTA?

On the other hand, the FIA haven't done a bad job up until now

Are you serious? What motorsport have you been watching for the last few years?
