Easy to fit...

Re speakers I would be looking at JL, Raindow and DLS:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/dls-c6a-p-5803.html
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/rainbow-slx265-deluxe-p-3852.html

I would recommend the JLs (having a set of the Evolution C5-650s) but really any of those would be good.

As far as fitting goes, if you feel happy with taking your door cards off and working out a way of getting speaker cables into your doors then I think you will be fine. This can be tricky though! (had to take the doors off on my car!!). You might also want to fabricate a mounting ring out of MDF, so the drivers aren't mounted directly onto the metal.

Aren't those speakers a bit overkill if you're not running an amp?

I was thinking that...they do look a bit OTT. I wouldn't need an Amp would I? Also - would I need a facia for the head unit / speakers or any adaptors/connectors for ariels or anything?

Also - Would I need cabling for it all? If so - what type?

Don't know about fascia - does your dash have a standard DIN hole?

With regard to wire, if you are not using an amp the only thing you will need is speaker cable. 16 gauge will be fine. The back of the head unit will have a standard ISO block for power / headlamp dimming / etc and will have also have a standard ariel socket.

Quick Q, do you not just use the cable that is connected to the existing speaker? Or do you HAVE to replace it?

The existing cable goes to the socket behind the stereo - if you're using an amp you need to run a cable from the socket (or the speaker itself) to the amp

No. The amplifier in a decent head unit will be fine, and there's nothing stopping you buying an amp a couple of pay days down the line.

Well that's good news, as in all honestly I doubt I'd need an amp in such a small car, and the amp in the Pioneer head unit seems perfectly good.

Does speaker cable make a big difference or should I just use the existing cabling (although it is over 10yrs old!)? If I should get new cable, what length/type/mm etc?

Also - I'm really no closer to having a clue on what speakers I should get...The head unit is costing £170, so not really wanting to spend more than that on speakers - Remember - Value for money! All other suggestions welcome :)

£100 on pioneer head unit
£70 on some hertz dieci front components (fine to run off HU, designed for that)
maybe 100 on a cheap sub/amp deal.

Best way to spend 300 :)

Thats good to hear, I'm fancying doing something similar as OP, in the Passat the stock speakers are pretty damn good, although I think one has blown, I was thinking of grabbing 4 components for the doors to replace them.

Being a right noob here, if speakers say "180W" (i.e. http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-alpine-sxe-1750s_p-20265.htm hopefully the little tweeters will go in the door to replace current tweeters), yet my Sony HU only pumps out 50w/ch does that mean the speakers are useless unless I get an amp?

Also would you recommend the Alpines? (i'm looking at that kind of price range)

Sorry for hijack, hopefully this may help OP too :)

I'm inclined to agree, I have hertz speakers and they punch well above their weight. Having 150w comps is all fair and well but they are a total waste of time when driven off a headunit when they are receiving 1/3rd of the power.

Do I need a Sub? I always laugh when seeing ridiculous cars with stupid amounts of bass, so not sure it's really needed?!

Holy Hijack Batman!
No worries, decided I'm getting http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/pioneer-dehp5100ub-p-7307.html so just need some speakers & cable suggestions. Also - would I need speaker conversion kits for fitting?

I'd say so, you won't have epic amounts of bass but enough to provide a nice bassy sound.

Really?! Surely some decent speakers would provide good levels of bass so a separate sub would not be needed?! Would really like to avoid one if I can...

Can anyone reccomend a decent set of speakers within my budget which are good all-rounders?! I really need to get it all ordered over the weekend...

You'd need an amp, some of the rainbow comps and a load of sound deadening for the doors to get a decent amount of bass. Going for a sub + mono amp would be the easier option.

WRT your wattage question, make sure you're looking ar RMS figures, PMPO figures are nonsense really.

You'll find that road noise and all the soft squishy stuff in the car tends to suck up any bass so a small sub makes a nice difference.

My setup is an Alpine HU connected to Infinity coax speakers in the front doors. There's a small Alpine amp tidily wired up under the front passenger seat, connected to a small Kenwood sub in the boot. It's an 8" sub, which most max power boys would say is pointless for the size of the car (A mondeo) but it makes a big difference to the sound. For my music tastes, it gives a really nice well rounded sound and doesnt take up too much boot space

I'm not really looking for a big amount of bass really...I don't have any subs anywhere else in my life, so doubt I'd need one in my car. I'm sure there must be speakers that will provide a solid, rounded sound with a bit bass when needed.

The interior does nom the bass away so you do need to over compensate.

What amp are you using Iain because I'm having problems finding a nice compact amp.

See above, the positioning of speakers and the acoustic environment doesnt lend itself to bass - a small sub will make a big difference without being chavvy :)

Its an Alpine MRP-T220

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_184579_langId_-1_categoryId_165526

Bought mine off the bay for 25 quid including a wiring kit. Could easily fit 4 of them under the seat if I felt so inclined and gives plenty of power at about 70% gain to give a nice sound from an 8" sub in my barge of a car.

Looks like I'm getting a sub then - But I still have no idea what speakers I'm getting, nevermind what sub? I take it I'll need an amp now as well?

God this is getting expensive...hahaha

EDIT - This look ok for a sub? My budget is going mental here...http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-swe843e-p-5848.html

EDIT 2 - Also, what on earth would I put it in? Oh christ.....
