Been watchin the team stats over the last week or so and noticed a major down turn in points and noticed i have somehow jumped the third in overall production.
Is it a case of lots of bad WU's or has there been a nasty rash of unstable machine's

Big Stan has stopped both accounts, Biffa has some downtime due to building works/rig upgrading. Ataro moved flats and sold loads of stuff.

I have given up folding my 4870x2 just went mental and really unstable, looking to get 1 or 2 9800gx2's soon and fire them up really want to get back in to it but just not the right time currently :(

Work, life and all the *$()*%£)" that goes with it are getting in the way of rebuilding my rig :( If only I could sell that XSPC kit! OH LORD! :D

biffa thats intresting about the corsair psu
i'm currently looking into which psu to get to replace my silverstone strider st75f
since upgrading system to phenom ii 940 iv had system freezing issue's
especially when i tried to run 2x 8800 gts (g80) and my 9800 GX2
the rest of my system contains 6 sata hdd's
2x optical drive's and 5 fans
as for OC the system its a definte no go at moment
so far ive been considering 1000w and up due to the large Amppage availeable
as thats where i think my psu is falling over

i would like to add in my other 8800 card to the folding and get more points for the team as well as oc this cpu as much as possible as it would be criminal not too really.
Do you think that should run my system properly or with my current hardware am i looking in the right direction with 1000w+ PSu's

I'd say you don't need 1000W really. Plugging all your stuff into PSU Calculator (I overestimated and said you had 2 9800GX2's) reckons you would need a 630W

Whats important is a good 12V rail or two. The Corsairs are renowned for actually being higher capability PSU's undersold, so they are built overspecified for the rating Corsair sell them at.

I have had a few brands of PSU's in my time and most have been OK'ish, and I'm far from an industry expert on the subject, but for my money you can't go wrong with either Corsair or Coolermaster PSU's (as a second option)

I had 4 9800GTs in this rig (different mobo) with a 550W Coolermaster PSU and overclocked Q6600 and it never skipped a beat.

TBH I've used two silverstone PSU's in a build and for "normal" use they are fine, but if you are pushing the envelope, well you want to not have to even think about the PSU right?

So if you are set on a 1000W PSU in your heart, then get a Corsair, thats what I would do.

thats the psu calculator i used when i first decided to upgrade to see if my current psu was upto the challenge and like you i overestimated by putting in 2 9800gx2's
thats why i decided to keep my current psu although its nearly 3 years old and running 24/7
yet when i use the psu calcultor at corsair it recommends me just the 1000w psu.

Unfortunately I'm partly to blame as well! Down from 17-22k to about 10k ppd.
Just had two weeks in cambridge post exams, so have spent most of it drinking or gaming, neither of which lends itself to a good output! Also back home this w/e so output will be sparadic until october.

i have been looking @ the HX one @ £134.99 as i do prefer modular psu as it keeps my case tidier.
price for it is easier to swallow compared to the £182.99 for the 1000w version.

May week for the win man :)

I was never a big hitter, but a series of bad luck has meant I've been completely off the map for a while. Hoping to be back shortly, folding slowly but with luck more reliably

I've stopped for the time being as the temps in my room are excessive with both GX2's folding. Doesn't help that we've had massive thunderstorms for the past couple of weeks and tornado warnings

I'm down at the moment as well, though that's only 5-7500 ppd.

A friend's PC bit the dust and he wanted to check some components (including the CPU). It was all going peachy until I came to put all my stuff back together, at which point I bend one of the plastic pins that goes through the mobo to hold the heatsink on. It holds in place, but the tightening mechanism is borked. It all works, but the contact isn't good enough to load the CPU without it getting too hot, so there's no SMP and there's no GPU until I can get a replacement part or a new heatsink :(

Balls.

Thanks. Just what I wanted to hear while planning my fifth trip to Raleigh, NC! :D

I retired about six months ago. Nowadays a single PC with a couple of GPUs can demolish my entire farm (6-8 PCs), so I thought I'd move on to something that still needs CPU work.

Just put together a new machine with an i7 and the GTX280 from before. Its a bit of a ppd monster (for a single gfx rig anyway!):

Mmmm... 4 way Virtual SMP... Everythings currently at stock due to the huge amount of heat the chip puts out and a less than flat TRUE... Not a huge difference in ppd to before, but its clocked lower than my previous Q6600 (2.66 compared to 3Ghz) and the 4 extra hyper threaded cores seem to give something in the region of an extra 2000 ppd. The best news is that the new rig draws 10 Watts more than the old one at stock (which is silly fast), which gives a pretty good ppd/watt.

This isnt a long term setup - Server 2008 R2 is great, but Windows 7 (without Hyper-V :() is just a lot more practical, mainly due to supported antivirus software! I'll try and get it clocked at some stage, hopefully with some long 'burning in' sessions to see what it will really do, although even at stock its stupidly quick!

I have, but havent installed VMware yet (Hyper-V is fine, but its support for Linux OSes, particularly mouse input is very poor, making it hard to do much!), and have been busy in the last week or so. When i have Windows 7 installed i'll give 4 virtual machines a go.

I think in the end i'll stick to having just the two, either two core VMs (like on my previous quad), or run server 2008 to get two 4 core machines. That way it'll free up some cores for video encoding/general use, and should be a little smoother.
