My boss is setting up a new website for a domain name whose email address has already been running for two years.

The domain name was bought with 123-reg and it's pop3 system is the email system that is currently being used. This is all to stay the same, except for the website which the designer wants to host on 1and1.

The designer told me to change the nameservers on 123-reg to point to 1and1. Will this not break the email system? Should I not be changing the A Records on 123-reg to point to 1and1?

Thanks

Yes, it will break the email.

Unless 123-reg allow you to edit the DNS entries to point www. to a different IP, then you can't host it on 1&1.

Change A to point to 1and1 and MX to point to your mail server should work? Thats what I am doing - email for domain going to gmail (MX entry) and everything else (A) going to my machine..

Yep get the designer to give you the IP address of the box that will be hosting the site, give him a gentle prod for almost breaking your email system, and add A records for www and @ pointing at that IP. MX records will already be set correctly.

Thanks all. Knew there was something fishy. Next step to 'prod' (Daegan's word, not mine, ;-)) the designer. Don't want to upset him though, just educate!

Thanks again. :-)

I need to change the 'www' A record to point to the relevant 1and1 server, yes?

Out of interest, what does the '@' A record do? Does that not mean email, which is handled via the MX Record

Thanks again!
