Talking to my brother yesterday and he was showing me a lot of stuff on the web about "society" and "government" and he told me that although I am the registered keeper of my car I am not the "legal" owner.
Apparently I signed away ownership when the car was registered.
Is this conspiracy theory nonsense or is there some truth in this?

Its nonsense, you own the car.

However, registered keeper does not mean legal owner necessarily. The legal owner is determined in the same way as anything else - who's to say I own my telly for example?

it's times like these this saying applies:

possesssion is 9/10s of the law.

even if the car isn't in your name, if you own it and maintain it then its yours.

Anyone who has disagreed with OP's brother is very wrong. You are only the registered keeper of the vehicle. It do not maintain full rights to that vehicle as you would if you were the owner. If you owned the vehicle, the DVLA wouldnt have the right to take it away from you, under any circumstance. Dont just say its tosh because it doesnt sound right in your head, find evidence that it is tosh first and then I think you will be surprised how wrong you are.
