p.s if theres any free software that does the job that would be great

For free, i;ved always used AVG Free, and ZoneAlarm for the firewall.

But imho, you won't get any viruses unless you are visiting -less that respectful- sites or downloading rouge files.
Use a decent browser, like firefox, with the cookie settings to med-high and blocking pop-ups(noscript is a good addon for blocking pop-ups and unwanted scripts). Don't download any suspicious files.

You shouldn't get viruses just by browsing normal websites, so keep smart on only visit trusted links, and accept files from trusted people.

i use kaspersky which is really good and super antispyware free edition.

Kaspersky has absolutely no product capable of working with windows 7 yet.
Their beta isn't close to ready.
They propose t'll be available in time for launch, but their vista work, esp their 64bit vista work took about 18months to get fully up to speed. With vista and W7 being similar it shouldn't take as long, but I find it surprising their current client simply can't function at all under W7.

I am a current Kaspersky user, and find it a good piece of software. They just are not as up to date as they might be. Also had issue when IE8 launched, Kaspersky killed some users internet by refusing to register a .dll until they patched. It was 10 days to 2 weeks for them to realise and sort that issue, post-IE8 launch, which preturbed m, as it appears they had done no beta testing with IE8 at all.

Avast free home edition will be fine, and use the windows firewall job done.;)

Wouldn't touch zone alarm with a barge pole tbh.

The best layers of defence are :

1. Run as a Standard User.

2. UAC slider to the topmost setting. ( Was nerfed when I last checked W7. Don't know if they've changed it.)

Anything that slips through can mess with your standard user profile, but not with the system.

Woohoo. 3000 posts. :D
