Hi all

Birthday coming up soon and I'm going to treat myself to a good phone, narrowed it down to the new N97 and the new iphone 3Gs.

So which one is better?

Thanks

This is something i've been asking myself.
i really like the idea of both but something is stopping me:

N97 - i;ve had an n95 and currently have an n96, they do my head in.
iphone 3g - im not cool enough for one :p

I was recently deciding between Android based HTC Magic/Samsung i7500, a N97 or a iPhone 3GS.

Decided that since I wanted a replacement ipod and that I really like the apple hardware + software that an iphone was for me :)

I've considered all of these, but after using a friends iphone 3g the sheer usability and intuitiveness of the interface outweighs the higher technical specifications of the iphones competitors. Nokia and samsung are still leagues behind they seem to just have the strategy of throwing as many goodies into a phone as possible, but without giving much conisideration to how easy it is to use. So i'll hopefully be ordering a 3gs soon, the only thing that annoys me about the 3gs is the lack of flash (why apple why!).

I'm getting fed up with my HTC Diamond Touch thing... actually thinking to go back to the E71 (great build quality, real QWERTY keyboard, fantastic battery life...) but the iPhone is interesting me a bit. What's the cheapest way to get one? I'd want a decent data tariff, can the iPhone be used as a 'modem' for a laptop yet?

The cheapest way of getting an iphone is probably buying a 3g outright and then getting a simplicity deal, you can do the same with the 3gs, but it's £440 for the 16gb 3gs and only £340 for the 8gb 3g. The iphone has been able to be used as a modem for a long time i think, but with the launch of the new model o2 are introducing an additional "tethering" charge of £14.60 a month if you want to use it as a modem, which is the same price as their mobile broadband.

Im not sure about either! The N97 seems rather slow, has a dated OS and is a bit thick. The Iphone 3GS has a poor camera and with no flash, no flash (youtube flash) and is rather expensive.
Personally Im considering Android ie the i7500, its a tough choice as there is no perfect phone out there. (Coming from an ex Nokia fanboy)

I was in the same situation and came to the conclusion that after all the shouting, the Iphone is just class.

It makes calls, it texts and it does a million more things.......perfectly.

All the other wannabe's just limp along trying

Tried both yesterday (about 30 mins each) and they are both great pieces of kit. I'm going for the N97: cost, a superior camera and multitasking clinch it for me.

@Christo: I didn't find the N97 slow at all. I suppose that they must have streamlined things in the firmware between whatever demo unit you had and the retail product.

For those who might be interested, the touch screen is a fair bit better than the 5800. Still not as good as the iPhone, but good enough for it not to be a major factor between the two phones.

This is the dilema I'm in at the moment, I just rang o2 as my contract ends this coming Friday. They would not budge on the iPhone tarrifs at all, which is understandable. I can't really afford to do £35 a month and may have no choice but to go for the N97!

Gonna get into the shop one day next week and have a play with them both.

Assuming you went into winch to test the phone, im guessing the Nokia store in town has units up now? If so i'll have to go in this afternoon and have a mooch :)

Yup they seemed to have a good number in. Staff were very knowledgeable too any very happy to spend a while showing you around the phone. They have wifi if you ask, so you can try out the browser/widgets and you should be able to pop your sim in a demo unit if they're not too busy.

I got the N97 last Thursday and I am very pleased with it. I moved on up from a N95 and the N97 is vastly superior to that. There's a few bugs but no show stoppers and I fully expect them to be fixed soon.

Any questions then fire away.

I think the iPhone is the better phone but the tariffs are atrocious.

The N97 is a worthy contender, and gets my vote.
