Work and pay reviews...... grrrrrr

Well, I had a pay review today, a little unexpectedly tbh. My appraisal is booked for next week and I was planning to make my case in that, assuming that the pay review would be done off the back of that. However today I was mugged by my Financial Controller and Financial Director and called in for a chat. Pretty simply I was told that I wasn't getting a rise. As I was unprepared for this I didn't really have a response or case to argue prepared.

I'm pretty annoyed tbh. I have been with the company 14 months and moved to my new role in January as a trainee accountant. I started studying at the end of Feb and have now passed all my 5 exams in CIMA. It just seems like a kick in the nuts after putting in all that work to get sod all recognition. On top of that, i've taken to my role well and am regularly seen as a source of help due to my Excel ability, even by my FD.

If I had stayed in my old role, I still could have had the same fully funded study pacakage and a guaranteed rise in this review meaning I'd be on virtually the same salary as I am now for a much easier workload allowing me to concentrate on studying.

Rant over.... just getting it out of my system!

Life sucks atm fella, when it comes to pay rises. Be happy you have a job for now.

Speak to a manager that's aware of what you've done and explain you're disappointed. If they're aware of the good things you've brought and agree you're deserving of a rise they should fight your corner - the right people saying the right things should do it.

If they don't... you've just got to take it, sadly :(

That's what I plan to do next week. It's just a bit gutting at the minute, more because I feel that I do my job well enough to not have to shout about how great I am.

I was due a review in march, I didnt get one and im not going to push it, we are lucky to have a job a the moment let alone deserve pay rises ;)

What reason did they give for you not getting a raise? How is the company doing financially?

Just talk to someone who appreciates you. With luck, they'll have enough clout to swing it your way... if not, it's probably the same for everyone else in the firm. These tough times are excuse enough for nearly everyone to not get a pay rise, so I wouldn't sweat it too much. Not many people right now are seeing any inflation in their pay packets, deserved or not.

The thing is, as happy as I am to be in a job, passing the certificate level of CIMA should be worth something for me. My view is that by the end of the year i'll be through 8 exams and come next review i'll have sat 11 papers. To be on the same money then as now would be laughable. coupled with the fact that as a business we are in good shape, it just adds to the frustration!

To be honest (as everyone has said) not getting a pay rise really isn't that bad in the current conditions. To be honest I should be getting a nice £2000 bonus soon, really don't think it'll happen though and I won't be posting on here moaning about it

Is that because you will be in the corner sobbing to much to post on the internets? :p

Seriously though I agree. Right now they probably just can't afford to give people pay rises. It is happening in my company too... meh, I am just happy to not be out of work :)

God, everyone lays on the "current climate™" business a bit thick.

because every company is recruiting at the moment arent they.
because unemployment is at the lowest level isnt it.
because every company is posting crazy profits so can afford to pay everyone.

Not really. We're in the eye of the financial storm, where everything seems relatively settled. But the only reason we're not obviously in the deepest of deep doo-doo at the moment is the government are propping the economy up with our future tax increases (and those of our children and grandchildren).

When the back end of this storm hits we'll all be grateful for what we've got. That's the best thing about severe downturns... they remind you about what matters.

Pay rises are *so* last year darling. ;-)

Of course your spot on Morba. It really annoys me that some people have no consideration for that fact people are losing their jobs, getting their homes reprocessed. Just because someone might not be directly affect by this "credit crunch" yet doesn't mean that it isn't affecting others.

Because we need it referenced 500 times a day by others and the media in case we forget?

I can honestly say that it is nothing to do with the economic climate. The company is doing very well at the minute, profits are increasing and we are actively hiring. I see the figures and growth projections daily and as such, money is not short. Its' irrelevant that people in other sectors are particularly hard hit, in my environment the "economical climate" is not being banded about by my superiors as an excuse for a downturn in our business as a whole because there hasn't really been one for us.

The other fact that is being overlooked is that I am not just filling the role that I took on initially. As I have learned and progressed through my studies, my role has also advanced and my responsibilies have increased.

Someone is asking a question, which people are responding to the possible reasons.

Perhaps you would prefer if people replied with it is because the easter bunnies needed the money because their baskets were broken and they needed the cash to repair them :p

I have no doubt some companies are using the current climate as an excuse, but many aren't. And while the answer may be a boring one, in many cases it is the truth.
