with the coming solar activity which nasa has said will likely happen 2010-2012 will the earth be protected from the cosmic rays if the poles swicth? Was the last ice age brought about by the last switching of the poles? Are we on the brink of a new ice age, would really shut up the old greenpeace lot hey? The link is very low but has some really intresting theories in there.

Meanwhile ice drillers, reaching ever farther into the past at locations where the flow of ice in the depths did not introduce too much confusion, joined the deep-sea drillers as a main source of information. The ice and seabed climate curves were found to go up and down in fine agreement, and researchers began to combine data from both sources in a single discussion. The most striking news from the ice was evidence that the level of CO2 in the atmosphere had risen and fallen more or less in time with the temperature.

the orange bit sound familiar?

I wonder if that is something linked into the 2012 Olympic games, as a cost cutting measure they are combining it with the winter Olympics!

The fact is that people were predicting the next ice age years before all the green eco crap started spewing from peoples mouths.

It amazes me that globaly, governments denounced global warming and all of a sudden, once they realised they could tax people on it AND GET AWAY WITH IT (something they could not have acheived 20 years ago), have done a total U Turn and people seem to have fallen for it hook line and sinker.

We even have people saying that the planet cant cope with the current population and limitations need to be in place on the number of children we have here in the west.

The fact of the mater is that the planet can sustain 10x the current population, we just need to distribute its wealth more evenly. Pulling the plug on the African trade ban would be a good start. Evidence suggests that as a nation grows more wealthy familys tend to have less children anyway.

There is absolutely no way this planet could harbour 60 billion people, bearing in mind as you increase population you must account for increases in agriculture and living space.

Take away from that space the regions that are barren/uninhabitable and you're left with very little "new" space that would be useful.

I'd be surprised if we could sustain even twice as much as our current numbers.

Urm, well yes, because we're technically in an interglacial (Holocene) at the moment, so you know... fill in the gaps.

Yes it is possible.

If the main ice sheets melt, the large volume of fresh water will shut the ocean circulation system down and the high latitudes will lose any heat normally transferred from the equator.

There are no previous evidence of extinctions or consequence with previous reversals so there aren't any implications on the natural world. Our atmosphere will be an effective shield against solar radiation when the magnectic intensity goes to zero and then reverses. The most likely problem is that our technology will be vulnerable to the radiation.
