Greetings, I don't often venture into the motors forum.

A change of job brings with it a 120 mile round-trip. A diesel car seems to be the way forward for this commute and a couple of motors advertised locally have caught my eye. I was wondering if anyone may be able to offer any advice or make comment, good or bad, on them both.

First is a Y Reg Peugeot 206 1.9D Style and the second a S Reg VW Golf 1.9SE TDI. Planning the buy to see me through the first 6 or 9 months or so until I sort myself out properly.

Thanks in anticipation.

personally i would go for the golf, but i'm biased

what sort of budget are you looking at spending? theres bound to be plenty of alternatives :)

I wouldnt want to spend 120 miles per day in either of those TBH, maybe something more suited to motorways?

The Golf would be fine for M/way work, they make a good mile eater and are quiet/refined. Buy off condition, and check how much life is in the cambelt and if/when the rear beam bushes have been replaced.

The 206 isn't a Turbo Diesel so only has around 70bhp, plus the driving position is a bit gibbon like.

Thanks, thats the sort of feedback I'm after. Not too comfortable a drive then? The other option was a Y Reg Passat. It is only for 6 months or so though.

Passat.

Dad prefers passats driving position to his 06 audi a3, and the passat is 7 years old

Passat is worth a look, as is the Bora (Golf with a boot).

A Mate of mine had a 206 and I did a trip to Glasgow in it - had the same twisted position as my old Nova where the steering wheel was not in line with the seat. I'd get out of my Bora after 250 miles feeling fresh and relaxed.

Couple of grand tops, yes loads about but these two caught my eye. The Golf is in excellent condition (or appears to be). Considering the amount of time I'm going to spend in the car each day I suppose a comfortable driving position ought to be amongst the top of my priorities.

Ditto comments about the 206. Unless you've got the proportions of a chimpanzee, its going to be horrendous to spend 120miles in it each day.

Try a Citroen C5 or Peugeot 406 HDi.

Passat is a much better choice - get something with a long wheelbase and cruise control.

And it's still going to suck taking what, 2 hours away from every day just in commuting.

why only 6 months? what are you driving at the moment?

6 months is when my finances should be sorted and in good enough order to get a decent motor. This will be a second car, currently have a Focus which is effectively the family car.

is it worth paying more for a diesel now, just to sell it in a few months after more depreciation?
you wont be saving much in fuel in the diesel by buying then selling so soon, i doubt at least.

Mmmm, good point. However, 6 months may be a tad optimistic. I still need to get things in order, so if the car I do get is proving to be trouble-free, I may just hang on to it. Lots of things to consider I suppose.
