Hi all,

I'm currently doing some research to find a transparent traffic shaper for use in the following situation:

  • 500 student users
  • 30Mb leased line
  • Each user is connected to the router on an individual Tagged VLAN
  • The router is acting as the gateway and NAT device to the users

The complicated bit is the fact that the router must act as the Gateway and equally must receive the VLAN tags.

Previously, we have used products like the Allot NetEnforcer and the Exinder 4700, however these are are a little over budget for this scenario.

Has anyone got any recommendations for other products to look into? I don't mind whether it is a standalone piece of hardware or a piece of software.

Thanks! :)

It's an open source solution and if you don't mind getting your hands a bit dirty as it is slightly involved to configure (especially the shaper) how about a pfSense box running on a decent server with some intel nics?

Could do all that you are asking of it, I've had one running with around 800 users and a sustained 60Mbit/sec throughput and it didn't miss a beat.

Opensource isn't a problem, and we've used PFSense in the past although I didn't think that it's traffic shaping abilities were true bandwidth shaping?

Or would I need to install some additional modules / software behind that?

You have :) The method for controlling access to each of the student rooms is done on a per physical connection, therefore to control each connection independently (and register it to a specific room), each room needs to be in its own VLAN. :)
