are 4890s just overclocked 4870s

I heard that there is hardware changes aswell

also the GPUs on them overclock up to 900+ where as the 4870s only overclock to 800+

the gpu has a diffrent name aswell doesnt it compaired to the 4870 gpu
or are they just golden sample cores in the 4890s that overclock way higher
 
Different GPU

You could say its an optimised RV770 called RV790.

1GHz clock speed is considered to be pretty common with RV790 while it was unheard of before
 
They are basically RV770s but with a few tweaks to allow them to run @ higher clockspeeds.

You can tell they aren't just speed binned RV770s as the transistor count is higher.
 
can you get those clock speeds with the stock coolers ?

It has been pickleing my head all week to get 4890s or not to get 4890s considering i already had a 4870x2 LOL

but like you say they are monster overclockers and this 4870x2 is pants at overclocking

i decided to get 2x 4890s on this week only XFX`s im just hopeing they are good clockers with there stock heatsinks LOL
 
you can get pre clocked ones (like the XFX black edition with 1GHz core) which have the stock cooler but i havnt seen many people attaining that speed through overclocking themselves without upping the voltages. If you look at the XFX BE and the Sapphire Toxic, the cards have 1x6pin and 1x8 pin power inputs for stability compared to 2x6pin on standard 4890s.
 
Technically they are the same but bear in mind the die was tweaked to allow for the higher stable clock speed, so you won't get a 4870 to the same level.

Niiiice... Which i had a rig like that.

I probably see me updating my rig in like 18 months, i may change my graphics card in the meantime or buy an SSD though!

They cant be any louder than my old 4870x2 with ref cooler at 100%
as that didnt bother me as i use headset when gameing.

I just hope there good clockers becuse if i get a great clocking card and a crap clocking card im gonna be in sheeet street.

well techicly they are alike but its not the same, so AMD haven't just "rebranded"

the cooling system has been inproved as well.
 
Damnt lol

OCUK messed up, my cards where stuck in a loop on there system and was saying printed in warehouse all day and didnt ship out yesterday :(

GOOD news is becuse of there mistake/misshap heh they bumped up my delivery to a before 12 next day so the cards should be with me tommorow now.

cant wait to test them out, 1 more day 1 more day heh
