Cheapest way to do 20k a year...

He doesn't do a very big commute so he sounds like one of those chaps who spends his life driving across town to mates houses and stuff.

Mates are overrated.

Thats exactly it.

Mondeo, after looking at insurance and economy it'd quite quickly catch up and start costing more than the derv pug apparently, not to mention its a tad on the large side.

Anyone got anything similar to a 306 to suggest? Another similar style hatch. I've no experience with Corsas/Fiestas/Polos/Saxos/Clios so I'm not sure if they a) come in any decent* derv varity. I know most of them come in 1L petrol versions but according to parkers economy still isn't that high and I just wouldnt want to see any mate of mine driving around in something that asthmatic

*maybe not the best word ;)

The Fiesta diesel in the MK4 is horrific, no power at all and the cambelt went on mine 20k after a change! Caused £400 of damage, all new valves needed. It's a 1.8 NASP, the 1.8TD in the later ones isn't much better as it's based on the same design.

The 1.25 would be where my money is.

Perhaps the Focus Mk1 in TDi form? Cheap as chips :)

I wouldnt want to do many miles in a 1.25 Fiesta.

I would go along with 306 HDI, or for more comfort, and cheaper too a 406 HDI.

Cheap for what they are, but not many about for 1k, not enough to make me think the ones that are available are going to be any good. :(

406 is what a initially looked at, but insurance is much higher and then I found out he wants a small car, but thank you :)

Looks like it is going to be the 306 to be honest, now he's just gotta save some pennies and buy one!

Well just sold my xsara TD.

Had it a year, done just shy of 30k miles. Cost me a grand, just sold for £800.

All I put on it was new tyres (£80 for 4) and oil + filters every 6k (£20 each time)

I'd say that was pretty cheap motoring really.

Vauxhall Cavalier (1.7TD or similar)
Vauxhall Astra (1.7TD)
Ford Mondeo
306 TD
Xantia

etc etc

Well everybody, basically there was no "mate". It was clearly me. Just because I cannot be bothered to try and justify myself on an online forum just to get some advice! hope no one minds.

Anyway, after making a tidy profit on the omega (yep thats right lads the exhaustless omega is long gone!) I had a bit of spare cash. Now 306 HDI was still favourite. But for 1k it would be hardy for the higher economy to make up the price difference if I brought a £450 car for example ;)

Anyway, heres what I got. 306 TD. 117k. FSH. Receipts from all of time etc. Immaculate inside and out apart from one or two tiny niggly bits. Years MOT and TAX. Only thing I don't like is the horrible steelies, so If i see some UBER cheer pug alloys I'll chuck em on.

50mpg so far and apart from vauge clunky gearbox its okay. Unforuently I'm a bit too big for it, pedals are too close to the steering wheel which does not bode well with my MASSIVLY long legs. But Its bearable just not quite as comfy as the Omega!

Only downside is I look like some stalker of another forum memeber (NomisF) who also has a white 5dr phase 1 306! (Pictured below!)

Doing 20k in a Fiesta is something so awful I shudder thinking about it.

Don't we have laws to protect people from this sort of thing now :D

Just tell him to grow a pair and buy a Mondeo (they aren’t that big), it's not glamorous, but it’ll do the job and it'll do it a damn sight better than Fiesta will, at least he won't need to employ a chiropractor and a dental surgeon at the end of the year to fix him :p …so based on that, might even be cheaper.

Oh you bought a car, nevermind then. I should have read more than the first page before posting I suppose.

I quite like them but then I am biased due to my one. :p

Even though I blew that one up rather fantastically, I swapped engines and it carried on going for ages. :D

Well I used to do 100miles a day at...*cough* 70mph ;)...with no cool down time, on a car with 206miles on the clock...yours probably won't die. :D
