Thought you’d like to know:

As was forecast in the Press recently,it would seem thatthe 118 800 Directory of Mobile Phone numbers goes live next week.

All mobile numbers including some belonging to childrenwill be available (despite a promise that children’s numbers will not be, one has to ask, how will compilers know?) andwill be used, presumably by operators, more likely by computers, toconnect callers – it seems that the numbers will not actually be disclosed, yet!

There’s loads of promises/options on the front page of the 118 800 web-site; one on how to go ex-directory so if you want to make sure that your youngsters’ numbers are NOT available or you don’t want cold-callers bothering you then go to web-site and follow the instructions (double click the link below):

Sorry , just a copy and paste from an E-mail I recived from someone in the know .

If you have kids with mobiles worth doing

The numbers cannot be disclosed straight to the requestee.

You receive a text to contact which you are free to ignore.

You cannot use this service to obtain a mobile phone number straight away.

you do realise that on the link that you include, it clearly states

At 118 800, we think you have been misinformed

118 800 is a new service that connects people, we don't disclose mobile phone numbers!

either way, surely it's like with a landline, you can choose to be ex-directory through your provider?

I was told that you had to have full address etc. of the phone number owner before you could get the number. This is not something that many people would know.

You can't get messages from people, it doesn't physically work like that, you get sent a text telling you that someone is after your number and then if you want you can phone THEM.

Congratulations you have won the worlds most difficult to read post.

After making the extra effort to squint at the words I have concluded that the content of the post is also useless. In fact on the very link you provide it says the complete opposite of what you have stated.

I asked my Vodafone account manager about this because I don't want our company mobiles appearing in their database. This is what he said:

Regarding the new mobile phone directory, Vodafone customers can rest assured that we don't provide customers' telephone numbers or contact details to any directory service provider except where the customer has specifically and proactively requested that their details are included in such services. We're not involved in the set up or operation of Connectivity's 118 800 service. However, phone number information may have been supplied to the service from other third party sources.

I suspect most of the mobile providers will say similar if asked.

On the other hand, they could just walk up to your child tell them that they have a free PS3 and to come round theirs to get it?

EDIT: OP changed post mine now makes no sense ands sounds slightly creepy. Need to be quicker with the quotes next time :(

EDIT 2: Gilly got it see post 18 for the info.

Ok here is a scenario for you , you have pedo that lives up the road , watches your kids be taken to school or watches them walk home from school , it's easy eniough to get the name if they want . They know the address and try and contact the said kid through the site by sending a message that a kid cant refuse to reply to ;

Something like I have a free PS3 or something for you , meet me here after school .

I know I am looking at the extreme here but I aint risking it with my kids no way .

No offence intended here, but it is people like you that cause major problems in society. You are the woman in the Simpsons that screams 'won't someone please think of the children?!?!'. You are the person that says 'that will offend blacks/muslims/asians <insert any other socio-political group here> it must be stopped!' on that group's behalf.

Stop being so reactionary. It just isn't needed.
