Mobile numbers go public next week .

If anyone attempts to ************** cold call my mobile number I will go ****** ***** ** ****** ballistic. Sorry I find it disgusting that someone can make money out of providing access to my ********* number.

I can't really communicate how strongly I feel about this. In fact I think I will change mobile provider immediately if this ever happens.

All services like this should be opt-in rather than opt-out. In short they're proposing to spam me without my soliciting the interaction.

In some European countries that actually illegal - I had to adapt my products in the past to cope with that requirement!

Sent Vodafone an email too.

Um did I say how annoyed this has made me? (perhaps you can gather that! :D)

erm, this service *IS* opt-in.

Less anger, more reading please.

:)

I'm more concerned with my eyes now after having to decipher that terrible use of font and colour.

No it's automatic opt-in, you have to opt-out if you don't want your number included, but it does just seem like a process to add your number to their database.

How did you get the mobile numbers?

Our mobile phone directory is made up from various sources. Generally it comes from companies who collect mobile telephone numbers from customers in the course of doing business and have been given permission by the customers to share those numbers.

It is a legal requirement that companies do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS.

Actually this company is breaking the law if they send me an SMS without me soliciting it:

7. Will registering my mobile number on the TPS reduce the receipt of text (SMS) messages?
No. New legislation, which came into force on 11 December 2003, makes it unlawful to send an unsolicited direct marketing SMS to an individual subscriber unless the recipient has previously given their consent to such communications.
Text messages are defined as "electronic mail" under the Regulations and, as such, they should not be sent without the prior consent of the individual subscribers. Companies are therefore, not obliged to screen against TPS because they should already have established prior consent.

If you are receiving SMS marketing and have not given prior permission, you can complain directly to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), whose details are under the 'Useful links' section on the left hand menu or for more details see the Guidance Notes which the Information Commissioner's Office have produced Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003.

Note their service revolves around sending you an unsolicited SMS based not on your prior consent but by indirect marketing 'consent' by possible accident (once you have accidentally authorised it the whole word has 'consent').

Personally I think that you should have to given every company consent directly rather than the company being able to pass on your details to another company such as this as "prior consent".

I just searched for myself & I'm not in their database. Good to know. Probably because I've had the same number for the best part of 10 years and have moved 3 times.

Have a search. It'd be interesting to know how many of you are actually in there.

Their business model at the moment is unsustainable to begin with:
In order to start your search:
* 1. Fill in the details of who you want to contact
* 2. If we find them, we'll text them with your details
* 3. You'll be charged £1 if we succeed

It's only matter of time before they move to open subscription and you are guaranteed to start receiving
"Joan from Adult Entertainment Services would like you to contact her. Call <insert premium number> "

You know it will happen.
