French President Nicolas Sarkozy has spoken out strongly against the wearing of the burka by Muslim women in France.
In a major policy speech, he said the burka - a garment covering women from head to toe - reduced them to servitude and undermined their dignity.

Mr Sarkozy also gave his backing to the establishment of a parliamentary commission to look at whether to ban the wearing of burkas in public.

'Not welcome'

"We cannot accept to have in our country women who are prisoners behind netting, cut off from all social life, deprived of identity," Mr Sarkozy told a special session of parliament in Versailles.

"That is not the idea that the French republic has of women's dignity.

"The burka is not a sign of religion, it is a sign of subservience. It will not be welcome on the territory of the French republic," the French president said.

I sense religious riots in the French Republic - mainly Muslims.

I don't think him speaking out against the burka makes him a racist bigot a la Mr. Griffin. Infact, I quite respect Sarkorzy for speaking out only in the general interests of the country he represents.

Before you reply, take into consideration:
- The burka is NOT compulsary in Islam. Infact, many Middle Eastern Muslim women do not wear the burka in their country.
- The burka DOES NOT define the headscarf as well, only the facial covering.
- The ban IS NOT in place.

I think him speaking out against the burka like that just proves that he's as thick as pig ****.

Speaking out against a cultural garment makes him less intelligent? How so?

By not not even bothering to either realise or state that wearing it is optional.
Who cares if someone wants to wear something that makes them look stupid, leave them to it.

By not not even bothering to either realise or state that wearing it is optional.

I don't understand why that is relative? He doesn't need to mention if it's optional or not. He's saying people shouldn't wear them, whether they want to, or are forced to.

See... thats probably why he spoke out. People's ignorance.

More like your ignorance. Show me where people are forced to wear burkas. Infact, in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iraq many women choose not to wear burkas. Off course I can't source you a link which says "Women don't have to wear burkas" but it's often seen in the media when pictures or video footage is captured.
