Lapped Q6600 G0 55c Idle

Hey fluidz,

glad to see your making some progress! Been there before man trying to get temps down, refitting the heatsink, re-applying TIM numourous times, not much fun really! :p

If you get the time (and headspace) try doing some CPU voltage scaling tests, that just involves turning down the vCore as much as possible while remaining stable in Prime etc. There is no downside to this process apart from it being a little time consuming. The upside is you may well be suprised how low you can get the voltage and what a big difference it makes to your temps!

I'm a big fan of ASUS but from my own experience I have concluded they really ain't that good at making heatsinks!

I think the ASUS Silent Knight II looks pretty interesting, especially if you have a windowed case with lots of copper and blue LEDs on the go but as far as I know it's not that good a cooler! :(

Thanks Wayne I'll get right on to it.

Ok Just to update this post, I ordered the Thermalright Ultra extreme 120 (black edition) and it arrived a couple of days ago. It came with its own branded thermal paste, which was a bonus. After installing it and sticking a fan on the side (runs at about 1700rpm, as reported in the bios), and overclocking the cpu to 3.39 ghz with a vcore of (apparently 2.2v as said in cpu-z, and stable) I get temps of 53c idle on core1, others are at 48c ish.., and I get 65c load in most games.. I haven't run prime as of yet.

Could this be a dodgy cpu? I did buy it off ebay, before getting it lapped. Also, one other thing, I accidently failed to connect the fan to board on my silent knight II when I first got the q6600. The machine shut itself down, but as expected I didnt get past the Bios. Could this have anything to do with the cpu reaching high temps while idle. I mean 53c.

Also my cpu has a vid of 1.2. This is low right? I set my Cpu as 1.3v in the Bios but I get cpu-z reporting 1.22v.. Its not staying at what I set it at.. Could somebody please explain this to me. Sorry for the noob query, I should know this already.

Thanks

The reported voltage in CPU-Z will normally be slightly lower than the BIOS setting. This is vdrop. It's natural, and (afaik) caused by the natural impedence of the circuit.
For example, my i7 920 is set to 1.18V in the BIOS, and appears as 1.152 in Windows.

You should also notice another drop in voltage when running 100% load. This is the vdroop. This will generally be a smaller drop than the vdrop value.

Is that 53C idle with your Thermalright Ultra Extreme? For only 1.3V that's still quite high.
I had a Q6600 at 3.1GHz with 1.32V (poopy VID) and was idling at 33C with a Tuniq Tower (slightly worse than a TRUE).

I'm on 3.6 with my Q6600 (cant remember vid off hand) I have 1.37v going through it with a tuniq tower & my idle is around 40.

I think 53 is pretty high for idle temps, if you tried prime it would end up well in the upper 70's.

try re seating (I know it's a pain) with less thermal paste this time, I get the feeling that you might be putting too much paste on especially as your cpu is lapped.

Oh & also make sure that the Heatsink it nice & tight

:eek::eek::confused: 2.2v???

Yes that's right, using the True.

I'm aiming to do this over the weekend as I used all the paste on the heatsink. It just would not stick to to the cpu as it's quite a solid type paste and not east to spread. Besides that, they never bundled the spreader with the paste, which was a disappointment, so I never had the right tools to spread it. I tried a bank card, and the stuff just kept on sticking to the card.. Tried using some latex gloves and using my finger - but the same thing, sticking to my finger.. Lol, the stuff which comes with the Hsf is useless.. I need some As5 at least, which spreads like butter.

As reported in Cpu-z yes.

Allthough it fluctuates between 1.184v and 1.200v

This image has just been taken, with one side of the case taken off. (The left side from the front).. The temps have reduced by 5c by doing so. I'll upload some pics of inside my case later.
