There isn't a motherboard that can handle both sockets, so it's a 775 motherboard for the Q6600 and an X58 for i7. So either you keep the Q6600 setup or go with the i7, not both I'm afraid. For SLi, I'm pretty sure all the X58 motherboards can support it, at least with a bios update anyway, whereas for socket 775, you'd need an nvidia chipset board, but certainly won't be future proof.
future proof motherboard and intel? intel are forever changing socket, like i7 and i5, why can't they just make i5 limited (smaller cache or limited memory controler (ie no tri channel ect) but works on the same socket as i7
