Suitably smug after such an appointment?:p

This is the guy who turned out to be one of the most expensive MPs in 6 years, milking the additional costs allowance like a cash cow and flipping his primary residence to avoid CGT. Great choice!

Should have been Hague.

A joke of an appointment which rather than showing that MPs understand the need for change shows a total contempt for public feeling. Surely this was one occasion to put aside petty political squabaling and actually elect the right man for the job? Instead we have a man who has actively campaigned to be speaker as he sees it as a cushy number has changed his politcal views to engineer this move and has spent years sucking up to the oposition. Quite frankly it's a disgrace and I hope he is the shortest lived speaker in the history of the house, even his opening speach was a joke how can he possibly say that the majority of MPs are upstanding moral beacons has he not read the Telegraph in the last month?

Not even the Tories like him :) Which makes me wonder how they could not organise a candidate that their party could all get behind. the next government looks like being the same as the old one!

They did organise one, he finished second sadly there are more labour than conservative MP's. Mr Bercow is estimated to have recieved 3 tory votes, even his campaign leader was a labour MP.

It's just a joke, this contry and it's political system needs to be sorted out, and as usual the main political parties are too busy trying to score points off each other.
I'm sickened by the state of our government and this is just another sorry example that the people and the welfare of this contry will always come last to the childish and petting infighting of our MP's.

Hahahaha.

I think Mr Hague might fancy the Speakers job in years to come maybe.

Meanwhile, I think he is content to be the next Foreign Secretary should Lablour be trounced at the next election.

But certainly there's bonuses and perks to the job, I hear their expenses package is very good. :P

No, the perks are rubbish too.

Salary is a mere £144k; you get a grace & favour apartment but your expenses are limited to a feeble £25k per year and the pension is only £40k. There's a beefed up travel allowance (among other things) but that's not enough to tempt me.

And occasionally you have to stand up in Parliament, which sounds rather tiring.
