I thought I'd let everyone know I'm a dumbass :D

Since buying my HDTV, Just after xmas, I've had the 360 setup. At what i thought was its best settings....

Turns out in my rushed excited state, I'd selected 1080i, instead of 1080p.

Now I know a lot of people think theres not much difference....BUT, Now I've corrected the mistake I am now most definately seeing improvements. For instance, Sometimes while play COD4 I couldnt make out certain enemies in the background if it was quite a busy scene and it could be quite hard on the eyes. Now it's not so hard on my eyes, and I can pick them off that little bit easier. Does that make sense? Is there logic in the fact this is the case for me now?

I did that too when I first got my 32 hdtv too :p was running at 1080i instead of 720p.

I was wondering just this, It could be a placebo effect lol

I'm under the impression also, But I'm unsure where I heard it, That even 720p is better than 1080i

Not quite a placebo effect but the resolution change isn't what you are noticing.

Call of Duty 4 doesn't even run at 720P let alone 1080P, you can make out things easier because the TV is bigger.

Oh and 1080i gives different results to 720P on some games, (some PS3 games look terrible with 1080i selected)...anyway it's not the fairest of comparisons because 1080i is not the same as 720P.

Just checked my 360 and I was on 1080i (Can't do 1080p due to 360 not having HDMI connection). I have a 32" TV. Is it better if I go to 720p instead of 1080i? Can't believe I don't know this :p

I'm sure you can do 1080p over component can't you?
Yeah as long as the console is up to date (as in been updated ever) then it should be able to do 1080p over component. More a case of whether his particular 32" will accept 1080p I would guess, as the majority still don't.

That's right. I could have got my 32" TV in a version that accepted 1080p connections but it cost abut £300 more!! :p At 32" I don't think it would have made that much difference anyway.

So what's best? 1080i or 720p?

It's my understanding that 1080i renders half the picture for each frame and the other half for the next frame (which gives that interlaced effect). But to your eyes you'll still be seeing a 1920x1080 resolution image. Is this right?

yes. And it renders sixty passes per second (normally), so interlaced is 30 full images per second, and progressive is 60 per second.

The only real difference as far as i'm concerned is scenes with constant steady movement, where 1080p just about shades 1080i, but other than that it really is at the limits of human perception.

For games Progressive is better, for TV or movies I think it doesn't matter as 30fps is fast enough.

??????????????? what has fps and resolution got to do with each other..

Anyone who thinks they needs 1080P over 720P on a 32inch is buying into the hype.

I tested all different variations on my 37" samsung series 6...

420p = lol
720i = wtf
720p = ooooo
1080i = eh? same as above just stretched
1080p = ahhhhhhh om nom nom

ags

1080p truly excels for PC use because of the bigger desktop area, aside from that there's not much in it.

My current 42" 720P Plasma out does my old 37" 1080P LCD easily.
