My gf kindly bought me this...
http://www.drharris.co.uk/product_details.php?crumbs=49&detailUID=104

However having had a look around it seems that a Mekur or Muele would have been a better bet. She went to the Dr Harris store and I imagine spent a fair amount of money on the stand, blades, cream and badger brush.

I've used it twice, it seems fine and easy enough. But what am i missing out on by not having a merkur? or is it simply a brand name thing?

thanks

If it works for you, it works for you. Merkur's are excellent razors but thats not to say there aren't good razors elsewhere.

She went to the Doctor Harris store? :p

Edit: If it is the stand, brush and razor set on their website which is listed at £145 I would be very cautious when considering other brands.

Never used one (I'm a Merkur man) but it looks like a tasty piece of kit! Is the head adjustable?

Let us know how you get on with it.

:)

I've given up on my merkur. Nothing shaves as close as a Mach 3 and believe me I have tried many many diferent blades in it, derbies, feather, merkur, isreali etc etc, shaving in 3 passes and although they give a reasonable shave the best for my beard is a Mach 3.

Gutted because the cost of the Mach 3 blades is just silly in comparison...

I would be chuffed to bits to get one of those, beats boring clothes or aftershave too.

Where's a good place to buy a Merkur anyway?
King of Shaves is turning out to be King of Fail.

I ditched my Mach 3 after buying my Merkur, and haven't looked back. Once you learn how to use it properly, the Merkur > the Mach 3 every time. The only difficult part is the edges on the top of your upper lip, just below your nostrils. It's a tricky angle and you sometimes have to adjust the blade.

I dunno, the best shave I got was with the feather blades which are supposed to be the sharpest but it still wasn't as good as the Mach3. I agree with the bit about the nose! I was holding it as close to horizontal as possible and I really just could not shave as close as the Mach3. I guess it may be my beard type which is pretty much like Desparate Dan...

I still use the badger brush and cream as it makes you feel really clean compared to gels.

And yeah, the King of Shaves disposible razor is truly awful.

The nose is a shocker. Forget about holding your razor horizontally; place it at an angle (45 degrees is good) and approach the underside of your nose/top of lip from the side, not from the front. Then use short, careful downward strokes to skim off the stubble and gently inch your way around.

If your Merkur is adjustable (like mine) you can crank it up to level 6 for this job, which allows the razor to reach out a bit further. Of course, if you slip, you will slash yourself and end up with one giant nostril. That's not a good lock.

:)

It's not adjustable.

Dr Harris is an old gentleman's type brand, but it appears they are now just known for their shaving creams, not razors.

I'll keep going with it. I only asked as when watching a "how to use a safety razor" she realised that she hadn't looked into it, and wondered what she bought was any good.

Luckily i have a goatee going on at the moment, so willl be able to get some practice in before I attempt the upper lip/chin.

Well it was very kind of her to make the effort. She could have bought you a 12-pack of Bics instead! :p
