"good" diesel is something like the x30 or x35D, or one the VAG V engines, or hell even one of the new bmw 4 pots like in the x20D, the 1.9 TDI vag is bloomin awful

This scrappage scheme is a big con.

Ok, spend £8k and buy a good car, second hand car rather than an ego-stroking 'brand new' Fiesta? People who buy new cars to be cheap are off their heads, and I include my mad, dribbling Bro-in-law in that statement who just blew £7k on an Aygo cos it costs almost nothing to run. When i pointed out he could run a £4k good car for the same amount, even showed him the maths, he couldn't get it past his pea-brain the fact that it's on £35 a year to tax. Not that a 330i would cost him: £200 more tax, £100 more insurance, £300? more servicing and £400 on fuel as he does so few miles a year and have better residuals. Ohh, £1k more a year? Spend £4k on a better car and have a nicer 3 years!

edit/ He's on decent money as well, has a good professional job and a Masters degree

Year old focus with 10k = £9k.. would be my suggestion.

Standard 1.6 zetec is a good commuter and fairly cheap to run.

You sound like you keep going back to Minis, just go take a test of a standard 1.6 cooper and see what you think? Then base a decision around that based on your feelings about said car?

I bought an Alfa Romeo for a grand and with a £10k budget I would have enough left over to give it the major cambelt services every year for thirty years.

How about an Alfa 156? £4-5k buys a facelift 2.0, 35mpg and while it needs servicing on the dot and cambelts are 36k intervals its not massively unreliable and saves many thousands of pounds over a much less interesting Fiesta.

No... let me qualify awful for you; 106 1.5 diesel. 306 1.9 diesel. Both non-turbo. Both PROPER awful

It wasn't obvious at all. Nor was it a cuss, or have anything to do with being alpha. It was confusion at calling the Fiesta a "girlie car" straight after suggesting the Panda, something which would appear to have the same image.
