Obviously tw wouldn't have one over a beemer ... but i quite like them, prestigious, and the xjs 4.0 is a decent weapon for sub £2k

Something nice and different - yeah it might have a higher cost if anything goes wrong but everyone said that about my 7 series and it is really just scaremongering for the most part. Sure, if the auto trans goes you need another one, the engines are built for a million miles, the rest of the stuff you'd need are just consumables - a little more expensive but you get so much car for your money. Buy with good service history and as a quasi-throw-away. You could always make your money back if you have space to strip for bits!

Make sure it has had it's timing belt and tensioners replaced, ideally within the last 20k miles or so. Also, it should have either had it's original engine changed for one with a steel lining or the original Nikasil lined block rebuilt with steel linings. Look to see if it has had a blow-by test performed, this is the standard test for Nikasil bore issues with the old Jag V8s ...to be perfectly honest having done 130k miles I can't believe it would still be running if it hadn't had the problem sorted a long time ago, so it'll probably be fine. But do watch the timing belt and tensioners, that's some preventative maintenance you want to stay on-top of with these cars.

Other than that, make sure everything works, check the aircon blows cold and that the heater blows hot, heaters can be a failure point on these, check the autobox shifts smoothly and quickly and check carefully around the arches and basically where ever panels meet for rust. Other than that, they are pretty solid cars. Oh, the history is imporant, history and condition are more important than mileage on a car like this.

You probably know this stuff already, but I feel better having given you a quick brief anyway, do some research on these older Jags though, so you know what to expect. I think they can be terrific bargains if you buy carefully, especially the XJR, but, they can be very costly if you don't do it right. I'm really not sure about the one in the advert though, it's just 'too' cheap really, I'd be quite sceptical myself.

I'm a big XJ fan and on my 3rd now. Would happily recommend them. I currently have a 1998 4.0 XJ8. I definitely don't fit the stereotype being a 24 year old and had my first 2 whilst still at uni! I got into them originally because they were cheap to insure (surprisingly) compared to other big cars!

My advice is always to get the bigger engine if you can, they are noticeably faster and identical on fuel. (average 23 with 27 on a long run and 20 around town). Mileage is fairly irrelevant on these, just check it's had work done when needed etc...

A few things to bear in mind; a lot of the earlier ones don't have Cruise and these command less money. They do go wrong but reliability is better than most people reckon. Due to the sheer length and poor rearward visibility, scuffs on bumpers are the norm.

Any questions you have, happy to answer them as an owner :)

EDIT: To add to Moeks' good post: I wouldn't worry much about Nikasil anymore, it's been so long since low sulphur fuel was introduced I don't think it matters.

Timing belt and tensioners are important, but if you're paying bottom dollar then the sheer cost may just mean you'd rather take the risk (it's what I do)

Finally, throttle bodies are a known failing point on these earlier ones and MUST be replaced if not already. Mine broke recently and losing power in the fast lane on the M25 in traffic is not fun! Having said that, Jaguar replaced it for free under a recall but i'm not sure how much longer this lasts.

The XK's are starting to reach "affordable toy" territory, and they are a stunning looking car. Sadly I suspect running costs will also be stunning, and not in a good way :(

when i had a gander at these I noticed the leather on the v8 ones seems to wear a lot worse than on the earlier straight-6 models.
