On Monday I went to a 14-19 meeting and one lady used the word 'disabilty' and was quickly shot down by the speaker.
The speaker said 'You are not supposed to use the word disability, you are to say special ability' :eek:
I turned round and said 'So are they some kind of XMen then?'.

Yesterday I visited Blackfriars where I said to my contact 'So all your service users have learning special abilities' and she hadn't got a clue until I told her.

What a stupid world we live in

I'll start a list of all those words removed through PC channels -

Without sounding harsh but having a disability aint really special is it...how did they come up with that one, are they going to change it on all application forms to list your special ability? people will start listing party tricks lol.
 
To me if you have a disability you are restricted to what you are able to do, whereas to me, I thought if you have a special ability you could maybe juggle or do magic tricks :).

Good call on the X-Men comment. In fact, take exception to my poor eyesight being referred to as a 'special ability', as it most certainly isn't. PC person, take that!
 
Its comforting to know my partly paralysed leg and the limp it kindly provides me with confers on me a special ability.
It makes me feel kinda........................................special
 
I see stuff like this, and I just think however thinks this stuff needs to redeployed to clearing out gullys and filling in pot holes.

If this stuff came from the effected groups I might understand, but normaly it comes from patronising leftie idiots.

For examples sakes, If I was irreversably damaged in an accident I won't be telling people. "I have a special ability".
 
More fool you for using it despite realising it was so stupid.
You're the reason things like this become accepted.
 
Working with kids / young adults you have to be really careful about what you say.

It sucks, I can't understand why people aren't allowed to call certain things or say saying, people who take offence to these are pathetic.

oh and by the way :p "brainstorm" is now a "mind map" ;) or "spider diagram"
 
I've always hated the term "special needs" which was used throught my school life for people who needed extra help.

Most my family work in a secure unit for people with learning disabilities and the PC terms aren't too ridiculous. They're not called residents or patients anymore, they're called clients etc.
 
I've never understood the whole point in PC anyway. From simple stuff like blackboard, right down to hardcore racist terms, the only reason they are insulting is because people like this tell everyone they are. If the person saying the word is not using it in a racist manner, then there is no harm done, and if someone is offended by it, then they are simply misinterpreting the meaning. But as soon as someone says something like 'You can't say blackboard, it's racist', now every time someone does say it people might think it's racist.

I realise in the past, and still now occasionally, there are some words that are used in a racist or insulting way, but that doesn't mean the word itself is racist or insulting, it means the person using it is at fault. If I refer to a person as black, that is because I am merely using a descriptor, the same as if they had dark hair or shorts on. They are no different from anyone else because they are black, it is just a word used. Of course, this is just my view on it, and I realise other people could be insulted by certain words, even if they are not intended to be insulting, purely because they bring up the thought of a disability or racism. But again, that is partially due to what I said at the beginning.

Brainstorm as in working with kids to come up with idea linked to a theme ?

So you'd have penguins in the center, and then you'd draw lines off it with idea's around it, so for example, like cold weather.

We were told we aren't allowed to call them "brainstorming" or whatever and that we should use the term "mind map" or "spider diagrams".

No I don't understand either, and was half asleep at the time.
