I was just thinking to myself that considering you can get an overclocked version of the 4870 with 1gb of ram for £215 or less so two being £230 or less. does the 4870x2 at £235-260 seem a little overpriced? especially considering it's one product in terms of pacaging and despatch etc?

I know there all dirt cheep however you look at it, im just wondering why they have maintained a premium over 2 4870s when i would expect one to be cheeper.

I think they have always been more expensive as you are paying for better performance (iirc the x2 is better than 2 singles), but with the added benefit of only having one card sat in your case.

At a guess because it's not a DIY solution; ATI, in the 4870x2, are effectively crossfiring their cards for you. You will always pay less if you obtain the parts individually and put them together yourself.

Yeh, i had this dilemma over the past few days, what to go for..

I chose 2 4870s in crossfire, due to it being 60 quid cheaper and both cards being 25mhz faster core. plus my board has 2 x16 lanes. Talk of stutter on the x2 (but i'd take this with a pinch of salt.)

But they were out of stock so in the end went for a single 4890.

Works out much cheaper, and i'm sure it'll be enough power for now.

If not... crossfire time! :D

heh yeah I'm considering getting 2 4870x2s in crossfire but i recon i can do it for 300ish when the 5 serice come out ;) plus i get to see if the 5series is so much better if its worth going for 1 or 2 x2s then.

didnt realise the x2 outperfored 2 stock cards by any real margin. may look for a few benches on that. technically the two singles have the potential to have more pci-e bandwith so i would have thought it would have been slightly less.

i wonder if we will see any x2 4890.. personally i think not but it would be rather cool ;) especially if they clock them to 1ghz also

4870x2 card means you can put it in any mobo. 2 x 4870 requires a crossfire capable mobo.

Q.F.T

The X2 has a broader market appeal due to the fact that it effectively lifts the restrictions of those who's motherboard doesn't support x fire = premium

hmmm i can understand that i suppose. i was under the impression that ati no longer charge premiums and go purely on value.. im sure this will all change the next time they are on top. marketing n all that guff

.

It is value if you compare it to the other 1 PCI-E slot cards at that point.

Anyone know what would be better performance wise? A single 4890 or two 4870's in crossfire?

I'm probably going to invest in one of these as well.

Do you reckon its worth buying the 4870x2 ASUS now its £235 this week ?

There is a small increase over my GTX280 do you think its worth it considering I can probably get near £200 on Ebay for the GTX 280 ?

for a small increase? personally i wouldnt bother but its down to you if you think you really need that boost in a game or whatever or just want to play with another card ;)

The thing is it is quite considerably cheaper too.. the xfx one is only 140 quid, which is almost 100 pounds cheaper than a 4870x2..

and the asus one i bought is 165, but has another 100mhz core speed under its /belt
