Banksy Exhibition

Well, I've been and it's pretty good. He has two primary rooms but as you wander around the rest of the museum, it turns into a game of spotting what he's snuck in.
Nice, I may go along this week if I get time. Are they ok with people taking photo's as I may bring the camera if I can...

I'd really like to see this but I'm not planning to go to bristol any time soon. I like banksy but this exhibition is a big step away from his street art. It remains to be seen whether he can make the leap to what is really a different medium for him.

Have a look at some of the pictures floating around the net, then you can see for yourself. It's more of the same thought-provoking stuff, whether you like it or not is another question though. In my opinion, it's not as deep or clever as people give him credit for, but still very interesting to see.

You can take as many pictures as you want but you're not allowed to use flash. They also have enough employees around to enforce it.

I had two days off this week so decided to try and go on Monday at 11am. Once I saw the queue (ALL the way down the street), I went straight to the Wetherspoons across the street, shared a bottle of wine with my wife and went shopping instead.

Tried again on Tuesday at 9:30 (it doesn't open till 10am) and the queue was much shorter and we were in by 10:05.

One thing I thought funny was that in the one corner they had a radio interview playing with some grouchy old git complaining and rambling on about what Banksy does. One of the things the guy says is "If it was actually considered art, they'd have it in a museum".

Cool, will go see this weekend if its still on.

You have a while to see it.

Cheers, no flash isn't a problem as long as it's not pitch black in there. :)

I think I'll leave it for a few weeks until I go down, once it's a little less busy. A friend of mine tried to go and see it during it his lunch hour, and there was a queue all the way down to the triangle! :D

Look at them, yeah. They're stupid chimps, yeah.
I often feel like this when observing Banksy's work. Such criticism is just so easy.

Two pieces in the display that annoy me:

A model village which now has American tanks in - woah Americans are taking over the world, yeah.

An artifact with a price tag on - woah culture selling out and losing its meaning due to tourism, yeah!

I sometimes wander if Banksy listens to Rage Against the Machine...

That said, other bits and bobs he does excellent, credit where credit is due. The display is 400m from my house and I shall be going tommorrow morning.

Well, it's art, isn't it? Would you prefer a (fairly dull) piece of scenery by Constable? Or how about Tracy Emin's tent, with the name of every person she's ever slept with sewn into the inside?

If it's got to have a message, why does it have to be subtle - wouldn't really be the whole graffiti style if it was.

Mind you, Bansky's weird now - when before he truly was renegade, now people actually WANT him to deface their walls! They no longer scrub the picture off, AND he now gets agreement to go into a museum, install his exhibition, and even mess with other exhibits!

It's hardly the transient statement which graffiti art was. Bristol's Stoke's Croft has exploded with graffiti - I like that, and I like that it keeps changing as it gets taken down or painted over. It's half the fun :)

It can be whatever he wants it to be - I'm just not impressed with potshots at easy targets.

I love and loathe Stroke's Croft in equal measures. For every piece of art I like, I see 5 'alternatives' dressed in the trendy, extortionate 'alternative' clothes and I feel like it's just a place for rich students to rebel. Take that with a pinch of salt, I did enjoy it when I lived there :p

Well, I went this morning a spent a good hour or so wondering about the exhibition.

Whilst there were several pieces which raised a few smirks, as predicted, it was mostly dross - tired and obvious political messages which did little to inspire. It was an experience, but the worst art exhibition I have ever been to.

I didn't feel any emotions from the pieces apart from humour or irony, and that alone. There was no lasting impression or atmosphere, just disposable 'punch lines'. Here is a typical example:

Whoa, deep.

Personally I prefer a less obvious message and being allowed to make my own mind up rather than being preached at (note, there were a few enjoyable examples that Banksy had on display along these lines, but they were rarer than not).

My girlfriend actually burst out laughing at the group of teenagers who proclaimed in awe at the aforementioned 'monkey picture':

"Whoa, that's really clever, it's like he's saying that all the MPs are stupid!"

So yes, worth a punt if you think you would be interested, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. 4/10

Went to see this again.. and it was well worth it. I recommend it to anyone.. some really deep and meaningful pictures.. and some really creepy things aswell, but that's for you to find out.

Personally, I think it's an art exhibition for the regular person. It's for the people who not only have not been to one before, but have had no interest in doing so. If you go expecting Picasso, you'll be sorely disappointed.

My friend told me about this on the phone. Coming down to Bristol on the weekend to see it. Looking forward to it.
