Just about to start this seeing as everyone praises it so much, picked it up for £5 - F yes!

Anyway is there anything i need to know about it that will make the experience better, i.e is there a guide for speccing characters etc? Worth doing the side quests? Or should i just dive in, knowing little about star wars or even what to expect?

You can't really go too far wrong with any of it, just spec the character however you like and enjoy the game :)

Now you've got me remembering how much I loved it the first time around...:(

first few times....

Yea it's just a great game, have fun!!! :D

Just get stuck into everything you can find, I love these games dearly and I really wish I didn't have such problems getting them to bloody run, especially kotor II which barely supports vista and is very much a hit and miss affair to getting it to run

To be honest, when i look back at playing KOTOR, its really slow paced and the D&D rule set make it feel worse then it is.

To be honest I was a little late to the KOTOR party (early 2005 I think?) as I too wasn't sure how I would handle a modern RPG especially as I'm not a Star Wars fanatic. It's actually fairly friendly to novice RPG players and eases you in gently, you don't get overwhelmed early on and can learn a bit about the game mechanics on the first planet.

That said, it could be a little too slow for some, as it takes a while to get some of the better characters into your party.

My recommendation is to dive in and just play how you feel like, that's what I did. I didn't go down the Dark/Light paths, I just approached each situation on merit, tackled side quests largely the same way as main quests etc.
