Behind you... Naked!
Right, in one of my PCs Im running a Zotec 8800GT 512MB job

The fan started to vibrate and so, I have taken it out and slapped in an INNO 7800GTX ( 256MB one )

Now, the thing is glitching like hell... Not all teh time of course, but enough to make your eyes go nuts.

Ok, the 7800GTX is one of a pair in an SLI PC and so, I have grabbed the other one instead and thats exactly the same.

Both cards are perfect in their SLI Setup, and apart from the noise, the 8800GT is playing just fine as well.

What could cause this?

Drivers is my first thought and so, I have removed the drivers and reinstalled new ones from fresh but it has not helped... I also ran driver cleaner in between just in case.

Im at a bit of loss to be honest. I could go with other cards but the 7800GTX cards are the ones I want to use as they are spare.

Any clues?

I can see why you're confused as your diagnosis and application makes sense - like you, i suspect, i would have thought the sweep and reinstall would have resolved the problem.

With the above in mind i would still be inclined to explore it as the possible cause.

Have you tried running the uninstall process again (checking the reg) and trying different drivers?

The fact that all the cards have been tested and shown to be ok in other rigs really points to a driver issue/conflict - and as such can be a real pain to resolve. (i hate reinstalls to solve issues but i've done ones in the past to repair similar problems - mainly due to lazyness on my part.)

Completely off topic (and verging on the surreal): i've built a den for the kids - not glazed or carpeted like your 'miniature development' that’s wired for sound - but it does the job and occasionally peace reigns - bliss - thanks for the tip. (You’re probably wondering what the hell i'm talking about ;) – we discussed it in a previous thread. You just happen to have a name I remember as I’m a huge Beatles fan (Rocky Raccoon.))

LOL you should see my Ferrets hutch then!!! - its even sadder

3 tier, Ground floor also toilet, has 5 seperate cat litter trays seperated for privacy for the girls ( yup, how sad am I? ) and the middle floor, get this has vertical 13" planks, then inside that is a sheet of tarpaulin, then a layer of vynil flooring then horizontal planks going across... Now, its both waterproof, and warm, but cool in the heat too, which I have found to be amazing... Her ehowever is a really sad bit... Its got carpet on the floor, cut to size too and fits snugly in, and even more pathetic is that we put wallpaper up as well... I have actually got some beading that I was going to use as a skirting board, but instead....
The top floor is also a conservatory ( yup, you read that right ) and it also has double glazed windows, perspex however, but still double glazed... I simply cut the sizes I needed and I have simply used a load of 6mm dowel to make a mini-frame for it.

The top floor is laminated ( once again, your ears are not lying to you ) and I have used the beading as I mentioned earlier to seal the laminated flooring.

I have added a light in the top floor, not for the ferrets, but for me really.

I have also as a joke, installed a Miniature Satellite dish.

The entire apartment complex ( lol ) is only 4 feet by 2 and a half and about 3 feet high, but the cage that I have built onto it. is 12 feet by 4 feet.

hey hang on, Im off on one again!!!

Erm, the graphics cards....

Ok, well I have done a semi-cure...

I have grabbed an X1800XT from one of the LAN PCs and thats working just fine.

Irritatingly, it plays Dawn Of War just as good as the 8800's do ( Well for the most part ) and thats all I seem to be playing these days, so it will be fine as it is until I get the 8800GT RMA'd

It has really bugged me however... I mean, how much difference is the 8800GT to the 7800GTX?

I eve nran it for a short while with no drivers at all and it still glitched on the desktop!!!??

To me, that says that maybe the Mobo does not like that card?

The Mobo is the Gigabyte DS4 which is the P965 chipset , I have a few 965 Mobos so its not the chipset but does anyone else have a DS4 and a 7800GTX? - its the INNO 256MB Graphics card FWIW

I dunno?

Could it be power drain?

Again the 7800GTX Cards were both used in SLI on a 400W Huntkey ( El Cheapo ) and the system that I put then in has a 600W OCZ so surely not?

If I have some spare time tomorrow I wil have another go... I will slapp teh card in and stare at the BIOS screen, then in SafeMode and then if it looks fine in those, I will chuck an install onto a spare HD, but this install is doing well and I dont want to wreck it just to test a theory out.

Thanks for the reply mate..Im waffling so I better GTFOOH

Ok, it got the better of me.

I have just thrown a 7800GTX onto the DS4, and I was sat staring tat he BIOS screen for yonks, then I decided to do an install and it went all perfectly well without a hitch until Vista Desktop Came up.

From that moment on, it started to glitch!?

I had not even put any drivers in ( Other than Vistas own of course )

So, it cannot be driver related as such can it?

Maybe I need specific drivers for it?

was it fine in XP and problematic in Vista?

I had to RMA my 7900GT because it would simply not play ball in Vista, something to do with the power requirements spec changing between XP and Vista..

XP v Vista?

Ah, no, I dont know... Vista only.

However, the SLI PC is XP64... The cards are fine in XP64 on both an Asus A8N-SLI and a Foxconn NF4.

I think I will test it in XP64 on this Mobo though... You never know...

Sounds like a plan – good luck with it.

you should see my Ferrets hutch then!!!

Jesus – you must really love that ferret!

I have trouble mustering up the energy to do the DIY jobs that need doing around the house – let alone building luxury apartment blocks for my kid’s pets. Kudos!

My oldest (5) is just starting to enquire about having a pet. I’m trying to steer him towards a tortoise as they’re very low maintenance and will probably live way past my children’s childhood years so no death trauma to explain. Plus, it has the added benefit in that the only constructions I’ll need to do is find a nice sturdy cardboard box that is suitable for hibernation (An excuse to buy another box of Bud.) and fill it with straw and newspaper. Then I just have to wait and hope it wakes up…

If it doesn't – I’ll buy another tortoise and either say it shrank/grew/changed colour during the hibernation process. ;)

Tortoise etc...

Man, thats so funny and yet so cruel... And at the same time, it kind of annoys me for not thinking of it first... LOL!!!

No, the Ferrets are mine. Not the kids, although they do have a part in it.

There are 9 ferrets in all

Pepsi and Coke ( Jills / Mums )
Shandy ( The Magician father who was vasectomised before he had the kids )
And then there are 2 Boys ( Donnie darko and Hercules - Both are ridiculously oversized)
and then there are my 4 girls... Binne, Al, Kay, and Aida ( Im sure you can work that one out )

Yes, I do love them to bits. People judge Ferrets withotu actually bothering to find out any facts... Same with Pit Bulls. They are completely and utterly wrong about them.

They are house trained ( although they do make mistakes ) and they are very funny and friendly and immensely intelligent, and they love being in a large family... Yo ushould see how the kits ( the babies ) are... They will wake up and have a nutter 5 minutes of eating the hell out of eat other and then they will go looking for daddy ( Shandy ) and wake him up... He absolutely loves them all, he plays so perfectly to their own strengths, for example ,the bopys eat hell out of him and he gives back jsut a bit more to show who's boss and then one of the girls will join in ,and he will all of a sudden be so gentle with her, nibbling her neck more than chewing like he does to the boys and only when she starts attacking does he go a step up... Its amazing to watch.

They have all been spayed / Neutered now and I have done 2 a week, and when they come back, I keep them in the box for a whoel hight after, and you should see all teh rest of them... They are all concerned about the ones in teh box, but they know and remember when they were in there and they kind of comfort each other... Its brilliant.

I would never be without them.

And biting... Oh my god, what a polava!

As kits they start to bite, but you need to nip-train them... This can be fun and agony... Their teeth are needle sharp and they just bite into anything and everything.

Although they are trained, they are still kids at heart and they do love biting, however, they know not to draw blood or anything, and of course they do if oyu are too rough with them, or they make a mistake but they never do it intentionally.

This is amazing really beause their teeth are so sharp... They just grab you enough to get your attention.

I mean, put on a pair of rubber gloves and then play and you will know just how hard they can bite... They dont know its your hand in there, they just think its a toy to bite the crap out of.

Anyway, I got to stop.. I can go on all night about my babies.

Seriously though mate... The toitoise or rather the idea of not introducing death to the kids is a bad idea.... They need to experience it and accept it from an early age or they will not be able to accept it later on in life.

You paint a very appealing picture – especially the interaction between all 9 of them. It really does sound very rewarding – your kids must benefit a lot from the enjoyment they must bring.

My youngest is a bit like that (2) – puts her mouth round my arm and stares up at me grinning – she too makes the odd mistake. And, she’s not even house trained yet – perhaps I should trade her in for a few ferrets? ;)

Yeah, I totally agree – funnily enough my wife and I are trying to decide the best approach without traumatising them too much. We’re thinking goldfish and then move onto a dog when they're able to look after it - well promise to anyway – I’m under no illusions who’ll be walking it and feeding it!

I still plan on getting the tortoise, though as it would be great to have a pet that, hopefully, sees them through to their adult lives. That’s if the future dog (lab) doesn’t terrorise it to death first.

EDIT: Did you sort out your gfx probelm?

What GFX Problem? Oh that? LOL

HeHe - Im sure all the peeps on teh Ferret forum are wondering why the hell Im on about my GFX issues... Im mixed up!

Seriosuly though, No, I did not.

I chucked an 80GB into it, and stuffed XP64 onto it, with the 7800GTX in there and it went perfectly fine. I saw no glitches.

I conneted the proper drive back up and it glitched.

Must be Hardware simply not compatible or Vista.

The original Card is being RMA'd however, and Im using an X1800XT in there so, I dotn really mind now.... its a good compromise as I dont play much more games than Dawn of War on this PC so its fine.

It really does sound very rewarding

You can never possily know just how precious they are until you actually show them love. Once they know they trust you, they are possibly the most amazing things you could possibly want.

Here, somethign that always cracks me up...

You go after them, they start running backwards... They never take their eyes off you until they know they can turn and run... Sometimes I can go for them in a bedroom upstairs and they can go all the way across the landing, down the stairs, along past the kitchen and into the living room, all running backwards!!! - bloody thick sods they are!!!

Its great to watch though... Look on you tube at the kind of antics they get up to! - I should put some of my own on.

the best approach without traumatising them too much.

Ah, so, a 12 bore and uncle bobs old horse not a good idea then?

LOL
