Thats right folks

Watch those VRM temps Carefully.
and get them cooled ASAP

currently my VRM temps are at 92c max load at 1.4v GPU at 980core/1100 *4600 Effective*

At those settings i was getting constant freezeing/blackscreens and lockups under FURMARK aswell as in games but not as bad or as fast as furmark.

once i figured out that my VRM temps where at 120c+ i relized WTF lol
so i slapped on some mini heatsinks and got a 120MM fan blowing across both cards in X Fire 2x4890s

Got the VRM temps down to low 90s and now what do ya know,
no more black screens or freezes or redlights turning on on the graphics cards

perticular D601 and D6201 Lights. meaning Thermal.

just a heads up and if anyone can tell me other ways to get even better vrm temps let me know.

Posted this on the GURU and posting here....
Now you all know why your getting freeze/blackscreen/thermalshutdown.

How can all your guys GPUs temp reach around 100c? Mine even struggling reach 80c with 955/1055?

How to add more volt so i can clock it more?

Im not talking about GPU TEMPS mate, im talking about VRM temps totaly diffrent

My GPU temps @85% fan speed under crysis 1920x1200 2xaa16af all maxed dx10
perfectly smooth gameing gets as high as 72c under load

Now VRM temps on the other hand are what you call VOLTAGE REGULATORS.
they get burning hot, much much hotter than GPU cores get so im telling everyone now to keep a EYE on them

and as for how to edit voltages ect simple

Here is a batch file someone made or i made i cant remember lol
it will give you a selection of

detault press 1
1.30v press 2
1.35v press 3
1.4v press 4

:)

all you need is rivatuner to be installed on your pc and its hardware monitoring enabled.
then open this batch file and select the desired voltages.

ok ;)

I had a similiar problem with a (pre) watercooled GTX280 (as per sig) nearly fell off my chair when I first saw the temps my VRM's were reaching!. Quickly pointed a 120mm fan at the VRM's and dropped them from 120+ to around 85 degrees under heavy load (Furmark)... glad I did because running at such high temps seriously reduces longevity of those components.... seems to be a bit of a problem for both ATI and NVIDIA with insufficiently cooled VRM's

The 4870's are the same - had the same issue when I put on the Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo as the included heatsinks were rubbish and the thermal adhesive was also rubbish - solved by using decent Zalman sinks and Akasa thermal adhesive tape - still needed a case fan as inlet to keep VRM temps reasonable though. Apparently they are rated to 127 degrees max, so clearly they are expected to get hot but that's some serious temp to be subjecting your new shiny card to!

But I thought stock heatisnk covers the VRMs as well? unless of course yours have custom coolers. What are the vrm temps like with stock cooler?

Have you tried just having one fan blowing on the VRM's themeselves. Sometimes adding heatsinks can have the opposite effects.

This is perhaps a silly quesiton, but how do you check the VRM temps?

Am I missing something or does the 4890 have extra sensors?
